  • 3 Films at the 2026 Chicago International Film Festival
    27 Oct 2026
Profiles in courage are a common theme in cinema, and they can take many different inspiring forms. At this year’s recently completed Chicago International Film Festival, now in its 62nd edition, a number of selections effectively addressed this very notion, spotlighting the experiences of individuals who took it upon themselves to engage in heroic acts of courage in different milieus despite imposing odds. Three of these films not only explored these ideas, but they also provided viewers with stirring entertainment in the process – “Liz Here Now” from the US, “A Bit of Light” from Iran, and “Elsinore,” a multinational co-production. Find out more in reviews of these three titles on the next edition of The Cinema Scribe.

  • Heartwarming French Comedy-Drama “The Marching Band”
    13 Oct 2026
Fostering brotherly love isn’t always easy, especially when siblings differ from one another or, more fundamentally, when they are unaware of one another’s existence. But sometimes circumstances break down these barriers and open up new dynamics, giving us a chance to test them and see what they yield. That is the case with two siblings long unknown to one another, unexpectedly drawn together in a crisis. Find out more in a review of the new heartwarming French comedy-drama, “The Marching Band” (“En Fanfare”), in the next edition of The Cinema Scribe.

  • Three LGBTQ+ Releases from Reeling 2026
    22 Sep 2026
LGBTQ+ cinema has made tremendous strides in recent years. As groundbreaking as they once were, however, the tried-and-true narratives that dominated the genre in its early years grew somewhat stale and clichéd over time, forcing filmmakers specializing in these pictures to become more creative and more daring in their works, even when dealing with stories similar in nature to their predecessors. The results have begun showing up in greater numbers at indie arthouses and film festivals, such as the Reeling Chicago International LGBTQ+ Film Festival, the second oldest continuously running event of its kind, now in its 44th edition. And, if the early screenings in this year's event are any indication, the programmers have done an outstanding job in choosing this year’s selections, many of which eloquently deal with the subject of same-sex relationships. Three films in particular have been genuine stand-outs in this regard: Canada’s “Montreal, My Beautiful,” the USA’s “Before I Do,” and South Africa’s “Black Burns Fast,” all of which are reviewed in the latest edition of The Cinema Scribe.
