The Business Steward is a podcast for faith-driven business owners who believe that what they've built isn't really theirs.

Psalm 24:1 says it plainly — the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it. That includes your business, your finances, and every person on your team. That's not just a theological idea. It changes the way you make decisions, manage money and lead people.

That's what this show is about.

Each episode, host Steven Abbott and co-host Austin Parkhurst sit down to work through what it actually looks like to run a business as a steward rather than an owner. Steven brings over a decade of experience as a fractional CFO and business advisor working alongside faith-driven entrepreneurs and every episode is anchored in scripture because we believe the Bible has more to say about business than most people realize.

We cover three lanes and we stay in them:

How you operate your business. The systems, the decisions, the strategy — and how a stewardship mindset changes the way you think about all of it.

How you use your financials. Not just compliance and tax returns, but your numbers as a tool for honoring what God has entrusted to you. Profitable, intentional and built for legacy.

How you treat your people. You can't steward a business without stewarding the humans inside it. We're not HR experts, but we know that caring for your team well is both a biblical calling and a financial decision — and we'll show you how to do both.

If you're a business owner who already talks about your company as a ministry, who wants your finances to reflect your faith and who is serious about building something that lasts beyond you — you're exactly who we made this for.

Welcome to The Business Steward.

  • Ep. 6: Where Did the Money Go? Understanding Cash Flow and Working Capital
    21 Oct 2026

You had a great month of sales, so why is there so little in the bank? Austin and Steven Abbott take on one of the most common questions business owners bring to their monthly review meetings. Anchored in Luke 16:10-11, Steven explains the difference between a profit and loss statement and a cash flow statement, breaks down working capital in plain language, and shows how accounts receivable and accounts payable create the gap between profit and cash. They close with practical ways to steward that gap — tightening your billing cycle, collecting faster, and negotiating vendor terms — plus a simple first step: pull up your cash flow statement and look at the trend.

  • Ep. 5: Beyond the Paycheck: How to Build a Benefits Package That Actually Cares for Your Team
    7 Oct 2026

Austin and Steven Abbott pick up the compensation conversation from earlier in the season and go beyond the paycheck to the benefits a business steward can offer. Anchored in Proverbs 27:23-24 — "be sure you know the condition of your flocks" — Steven makes the case that the right benefits start with knowing your people, not copying your industry. They walk through healthcare (including employer-funded options like an ICHRA), retirement plans, PTO and flexibility, and more creative benefits such as corporate chaplains and education support. They also tackle the owner who says "I can't afford it," and close with a simple first step: have a conversation with your team.
