Edinburgh is a city built in layers. Beneath its crowded streets lie sealed rooms, forgotten passageways, and stories that never entirely remained buried.

Stories Edinburgh Podcast explores the Scottish capital’s folklore, unsolved mysteries, true crimes, and haunted history. Each week, a British storyteller leads you through shadowed closes, ancient graveyards, underground vaults, and the weathered streets where history and legend continue to overlap.

Journey from the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle to Greyfriars Kirkyard, the Old Town, and the chambers hidden beneath the city. Discover notorious crimes, restless spirits, disputed legends, unexplained events, and the real history that inspired generations of dark storytelling.

Some tales can be traced through surviving records. Others changed as they passed from one storyteller to another. Episodes distinguish documented history, reported claims, folklore, and creative reconstruction whenever possible.

True-crime stories are presented with consideration for victims, survivors, and their families. Reported allegations are identified as such, and anyone accused of wrongdoing is presumed innocent unless proven guilty through an appropriate legal process.

Every stone has a story. Some are simply darker than others.

  • Greyfriars Bobby and the Kirkyard That Kept Him
    23 Oct 2026
Greyfriars Bobby and the Kirkyard That Kept Him

Every night for fourteen years, a small Skye Terrier slept on a grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard — through fourteen Edinburgh winters of frost, fog, and rain. The night watchman was long dead. The dog stayed anyway. And when Bobby died in eighteen seventy-two, the city buried him where no dog had ever been buried, and raised a statue, and argued about him for a hundred and fifty years.

This night walk — nearly two hours in thirty-nine small chapters — follows the true story of Greyfriars Bobby from the winter of eighteen sixty-one to the bronze nose tourists rub for luck today. John Gray and the missing grave. Sergeant Traill and the daily firing of the Castle gun. The Lord Provost's licence, the red collar, the two-Bobbys dispute. And the kirkyard itself: Covenanters' Prison, the Black Mausoleum, the mortsafes, the symbols on the stones — the most haunted ground in Scotland, and the one ghost story in it that was always, provably, real.

Documented history, reported claims, folklore, and honest reconstruction — always marked as such. That is the covenant of this show. The dark deserves the truth, or the closest we can come to it.
