These times in American history may seem unprecedented, with an active vote suppressor as president and sections of the Voting Rights Act gutted. But the country’s history of voter suppression is as old as America itself, whether you’re talking ballot stuffing or gerrymandering.

Here to explain are David Walbert, a constitutional lawyer who litigated voting rights cases for decades, and Anoa Changa-Peck, a retired attorney-turned-journalist who has covered electoral justice for NewsOne, Truthout and Scalawag.

David and Anoa give the U.S. government crash course that we should've had in school, emphasizing the Supreme Court’s outsized role in fostering voter inequality from the start of America’s history. David also looks back at his landmark litigation, and how, while challenging voter systems in the American South, he met justices like Thurgood Marshall and John Roberts along the way.

”I semi-laugh when we say at one point in my career I was 2-0 against John Roberts,” David says. “But he’s made up for lost time, hasn’t he?”
