Big life hits me hard, and 38 years sober still doesn’t give me a force field. Sobriety gives me something better: the ability to stay present, feel everything, and get through a medical crisis without making it worse with alcohol.
• sobriety not protecting us from illness, loss, fear, and sudden change
• blacking out, emergency care, surgery, and living with a defibrillator
• staying present and participating in my own recovery in real time
• being scared, angry, and disappointed while staying sober
• grief over canceled plans and letting feelings stay simple
• PTSD after the event and getting help from a cardiology psychologist
• not comparing early sobriety to long-term sobriety
• using meetings, calls, and community support instead of going alone
