À propos de ce contenu audio

Welcome to Silence is Violence - Stories of Financial Education, a podcast hosted by Chloe B. McKenzie. This series delves into the hidden realities and oppressive origins of financial education. As a traumographer, Chloe maps financial trauma and exposes how systems designed to concentrate wealth and power often leave individuals feeling solely responsible for their hardships. We challenge the traditional narratives of financial education that emphasize personal responsibility and self-reliance, exploring instead how these narratives can perpetuate financial trauma. In collaboration with the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE), Silence is Violence examines financial education's role in the broader pursuit of wealth justice. Across four insightful episodes, we uncover the harmful history and cultural impacts of financial education, discuss the importance of grounding it in identity and cultural understanding, and present data-informed solutions that address the intersections of financial literacy, shame, and trauma. Our exploration also considers financial education's potential to advance wealth justice. Throughout this journey, Chloe invites experts and individuals with lived experiences to break the silence around financial trauma, encouraging listeners to uncover its complex layers and discover how each of us can become catalysts for change.Copyright 2025 NEFE & Chloe B. Now that we know the origins of financial literacy, we can better understand why the larger financial education system encompassing financial literacy has embedded legacies of white supremacy. For years, the prevailing message has been that anyone can budget, save, borrow, and invest their way out of financial hardship, and even oppression—but that mindset is shifting.

In this episode, Chloe and her guest Michelle Samuels-Jones, Ed.D discuss this pivotal turning point. They explain why financial education is evolving to recognize identity and cultural competency as essential to financial education. They will also discuss practical strategies and approaches they continue to learn about, amplify and support to model financial education can—and should—engage people in a more inclusive and equitable way.
