Most of us spend years making our homes exactly where we want to live. But as we get older, familiar features like stairs, bathtubs, dim hallways and even doorknobs can become harder to navigate. That doesn't necessarily mean it's time to move. With some thoughtful planning, your home (or the home of an aging parent) may be able to change along with you, helping you remain safe, comfortable and independent for years to come.
In this episode of the Trust Issues Podcast, consumer investigator Dale Cardwell and senior producer Marnie Zambri explore aging in place and the home improvements that can make it possible. With three out of four Americans age 50 and older saying they want to remain in their current homes as they age, planning for the future is becoming an important conversation for millions of families.
Joining them is Chris Lalomia, founder of TrustDALE Certified The Trusted Toolbox, whose team is certified in aging-in-place remodeling. Chris walks Dale and Marnie through a home from the driveway to the bedroom, identifying potential trouble spots and explaining changes homeowners can make before everyday features become obstacles.
Some improvements can be surprisingly simple. Better lighting, lever-style door handles, grab bars, nonslip surfaces and removing or securing loose rugs can make a home easier and safer to navigate without requiring a major renovation. The conversation also tackles larger projects, including zero-entry showers, wider doorways, stair solutions and kitchen modifications.
The team also looks at how smart-home technology, including motion-sensor lighting, smart locks, video doorbells, smart thermostats and voice-activated features, can help make everyday life easier. And for homeowners worried that accessibility improvements will make their house look institutional, Chris explains how thoughtful design can combine function with a home's existing style.
