  • The House That Went Silent.
    6 Oct 2026

A worried father calls from out of state because something is wrong with his adult son in Peoria, Arizona. The son is in his thirties, has struggled with drugs for years, has been in and out of rehab, and usually checks in with family every week or so when he needs help. This time, the calls stop.

At first, the family hopes there is a simple explanation. Maybe he checked himself into rehab again. Maybe he is sleeping off another rough stretch. Maybe he just does not want to talk. But after days of silence, unanswered calls, and no sign of activity at the house, those explanations start to feel less likely.

Seth Ward and his team begin with the basics. They watch the house. No lights come on. Nobody comes or goes. A female investigator tries the old pizza-delivery approach in hopes someone inside will answer the door. No luck. Rehab facilities are checked. Still nothing.

Then the stepfather says the words nobody wants to say out loud: he thinks his son may be inside the house, dead.

    That changes everything.

Because the home has an alarm, Seth first goes to the Peoria Police Department, identifies himself, shows his credentials, and explains what may have to happen. One investigator remains out front in case patrol officers respond. Seth circles the house looking for the least destructive way to get inside.

A dog door seems like the best option. It turns out to be nearly indestructible.

    That leaves the windows.

With authorization from the family, Seth chooses a smaller kitchen window rather than one of the large, expensive windows in the back. He raises a baseball bat, breaks the glass, and clears enough of the opening to look inside.

The moment the window breaks, the case takes a dark turn.

It is the middle of an Arizona summer, and the heat pouring out of the house is intense. The air conditioning is off. Flies are gathered around the opening and inside. Then comes a smell Seth has never experienced before.

At that point, there is no reason to climb through the window. There is no need to search room by room. The scene is backed away from, and police are called again.

Officers arrive. Procedures are followed. The family waits for the answer they already fear.

Eventually, police enter the home and confirm the worst.

The man had been dead for roughly a week to ten days, apparently from a drug overdose.

This episode of Spy & Tell is not about catching a cheating spouse or following someone who thinks nobody is watching. It is about a family that knew something was wrong, an investigation that slowly eliminated every other possibility, and the moment a quiet Arizona house finally gave up the truth.

Sometimes private investigation is surveillance, databases, cameras, and long nights in a vehicle. Sometimes it is patience, judgment, and knowing when to keep looking. And sometimes the answer you find is the one everyone was hoping would not be there.

In this episode, Seth tells the full story of the Peoria case, including the failed pizza delivery, the police coordination, the nearly indestructible dog door, the broken kitchen window, and the moment the heat, flies, and smell made it clear the case had changed.

Content note: This episode discusses addiction, drug overdose, death, and the discovery of a deceased person.

Spy & Tell is hosted by Seth Ward, a licensed private investigator since 1994. Each episode pulls from real investigative experiences involving infidelity, surveillance, custody cases, difficult families, strange assignments, and the unexpected situations that come with more than three decades in the field.
