Why Chinese automakers may be closer to the U.S. market than people realize
    21 May 2026

In the first episode of RPM with Jim O’Brien, Jim sits down with Reese Counts from Edmunds.com to discuss one of the most important automotive stories developing right now — the arrival of Chinese automakers and the Geely Galaxy M9.

After Edmunds became one of the first major U.S. automotive outlets to test the Chinese-built SUV, Reese explains why the Geely surprised nearly everyone on the team with its quality, technology, pricing and 800-mile hybrid range.

    The conversation explores:

    • China’s growing automotive footprint
    • The future of plug-in hybrids and EREVs
    • Volvo and Polestar’s connection to Geely
    • BYD’s global expansion
    • Detroit’s stake in the evolving market
    • Tariffs, politics and security concerns
    • Whether American automakers are prepared for what’s next

RPM with Jim O’Brien delivers real-world automotive conversations from a Detroit perspective — covering cars, motorsports, technology and the rapidly changing future of transportation.
