  • Texas Senate Is a Dead Heat While Trump Sits at 46% Approval | 10/14/26
    14 Oct 2026
The latest Marist poll of Texas likely voters just dropped, and the Senate race is a dead heat. Democrat James Talarico is at 47%, Republican Ken Paxton at 45%. Independents are breaking for Talarico at 52%, while a majority of the same voters still think Paxton is going to win the seat anyway. That gap between the numbers and the expectation is the real story here. Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is holding a 49-45 edge over Gina Hinojosa for governor among likely voters, with seven in 10 Texans convinced the incumbent will win. The generic congressional ballot shows Republicans up five points. But Trump’s job approval in Texas is upside down at 46% approve to 54% disapprove, and 43% of likely voters say their family finances have gotten worse over the last year. Thirty-eight percent say their congressional vote is mainly against the president. These are the numbers driving the competitiveness, not some sudden leftward shift in the state. The partisan divides are sharp, the money is flowing, and the early-vote window is about to open. If you care about whether Texas stays red or whether the midterms turn into a referendum on the last year of economic pain and presidential approval, this poll is the clearest snapshot we have right now. Watch the numbers, not the spin. Pat also covered: Kamala Harris tells Keke Palmer her laugh comes from “powerful women who laughed from their bellies” and insists critics “are not going to take my joy.” JD Vance at a Texas rally for Ken Paxton tells a supporter “I love you too, sir — in a totally platonic way. I’m the vice president, not James Talarico.” New White House press secretary Katie Zacharia looks nervous and stiff in her first briefing, calls on only three reporters, ends it early, and slips by calling her husband “my president.” Top baby names in England and Wales (2025 ONS data): Olivia remains #1 for girls; Muhammad is #1 for boys for the third straight year. Donald Trump at a Youngstown, Ohio, rally says Iran will not get nuclear weapons and that U.S. action has significantly weakened the regime. Do you trust these Marist numbers on the Texas Senate race, or do you think the likely-voter screen is off? Have you seen your own finances get worse, stay the same, or improve over the last 12 months? • DNC Chair Ken Martin Embraces DSA Communists as the Big Tent | 10/13/26
    13 Oct 2026
Ken Martin just said the quiet part out loud. The DNC chair sat down with Peter Alexander and refused to treat the Democratic Socialists of America as a liability — even as Republicans point out their calls to abolish ICE, abolish the police, and open the borders. Instead he doubled down on the “big tent,” claiming you win through addition, not subtraction, and that expanding to include these new voices is how Democrats grow. This isn’t a fringe group on the outside looking in. The DSA has its own Abolish ICE Commission, endorses candidates running on abolishing the Senate and calling for socialized medicine, and has seen its influence rise with figures like Bernie Sanders and Zohran Mamdani. Martin’s answer was that the vast majority of Americans sit somewhere in the middle, center-left, or center-right — yet that doesn’t stop the party from bringing these voices in. A White House analysis of selected DSA platform items put the 10-year cost at roughly $49 trillion, or about $355,000 per household, largely driven by Medicare for All plus open borders and related policies. For regular Americans watching border enforcement, public safety, and household budgets, the question is simple: How far does “addition” go before the coalition no longer represents the people who have to live with the results? Pat also covered: Game-worn Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls red road jersey from Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals just sold privately for a record $14 million. U.S. forces and Reaper drones now operating in Ecuador against drug cartels under the Shield of the Americas initiative. French supermarket cyberattack forces fridges to 50°C, spoiling food and causing fires at hundreds of stores. Trump on “Gays for Palestine”: “Do you know what they do to gay people in that part of the world? Let’s send them over to negotiate — you’ll never see them again.” German state records 358 child marriages since 2012 — including 11-year-old Iraqi girl — with only eight annulled. Does the Democratic Party still represent the middle when its chair welcomes the abolish-ICE wing? Have you seen this shift play out in your own state or local races? • Trump Announces Energy Ceasefire — Zelenskyy Says It Was News to Him | 10/12/26
    12 Oct 2026
Trump declared an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine “effective immediately.” He posted it after Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries that the administration blamed for pushing U.S. diesel to $6.28 a gallon. Days earlier, he announced a deal for Russia to send hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel to ease pressure on American drivers and truckers. Zelenskyy called the diesel purchase a “betrayal” and then said the ceasefire announcement itself was news to him. He indicated that Ukraine would support a mutual halt if Russia stops hitting Ukrainian energy sites, but Moscow has not confirmed. This is at least the fourth time Trump has publicly announced an energy truce; earlier versions, including the September one, unraveled within days as strikes continued. Every refinery or power plant hit tightens diesel supply and keeps pump prices elevated heading into winter. Ukraine says the strikes cut Russian revenue. The administration says the same strikes raise costs for American workers. Both can be true, which is why the mutual stop idea keeps returning — and why it keeps failing when one side treats it as optional. Pat also covered: Keith Malinak health update: Our longtime producer is in the ICU after a stroke and remains in stable critical condition. James Talarico was off the trail for ~12 days; an audio recording alleged a Lindner Center of Hope employee in Mason, Ohio confirmed he had been a patient and was discharged. Takashi Yamazaki’s sequel to Godzilla Minus One has confirmed release dates—November 3 in Japan and November 6 in North America. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed has a record of supporting benefits for illegal immigrants arguing that denying them access is discriminatory and that the state should stop “discriminating by documentation status.” Homeland Security Investigations executed a court-authorized search warrant at Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C. as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation Does an energy ceasefire neither side has fully confirmed change anything this week, or is this another announcement that lasts until the next strike? Have the previous attempts made any real difference in what Americans pay at the pump?
