On a quiet practice night in a 15th-century Cornish tower, Elowen and two fellow ringers sit with their tea. Every rope tied off, every bell hanging dead still and unable to sound. Then the tenor, cast in 1683, rings one enormous stroke. From the sealed chamber above come slow, deliberate footsteps. The next morning she finds a track drawn through years of undisturbed dust from the bell to the trapdoor.

Then Marnie, granddaughter of one of Lake Superior’s last lighthouse keepers, keeps getting calls about a glow in the old lamp room. A room with no lamp, no power, nothing to burn for sixty years. It shows only on the black, dangerous nights. Her grandfather swore he’d die before he let that light go dark. An old-timer who knew him: “I don’t think dying changed his mind.”

We’re taught that science and the séance room are enemies. Cold reason on one side; candles, trances and table-tipping on the other. But that is not the whole story.

• Thomas Edison - The man who electrified the world and, in 1920, announced he was building a “spirit phone” to the dead, a machine that was never found
• Alfred Russel Wallace - The co-founder of evolution itself, who defended the spirits to his dying day and believed a higher intelligence guided mankind
• Nikola Tesla - The electrical genius who heard a rhythmic signal in his mountain laboratory and believed, for a moment, that the universe was listening back
• Alexander Graham Bell - The father of the telephone, haunted by silence and loss, who made a disembodied voice travel invisibly through the air

Then the big question: why them? Why do the coldest, most rational minds keep walking into the darkened room?

Bronwen's five-year-old is given an old hand-stitched doll from a neighbour's late mother, names it Sally, and invents "the answering game." Soon Anya is describing a life no child could invent: a coal stove, a copper washtub, a baby brother who "went in the ground." Then Bronwen hears two voices from the room where her daughter plays alone.

Then Dale, a Colorado rancher, has kept a dozen dogs that all refuse to cross the same invisible line near an old rise on his land. When drought pushes him to dig there, the third scoop brings up small bones, laid with care. That night, he and his wife hear faint singing from the hollow for one night, then never again in thirty years.
