**Veteran Homelessness Is Closer Than You Think | Resources, Housing Assistance & Hope for Pennsylvania Veterans**
Veteran homelessness doesn't always look like someone sleeping on a park bench. Many veterans are living in their cars, staying in motels, couch surfing with friends or family, or quietly facing eviction without anyone realizing they need help. In this episode of PA Resource Roundup, host Jessica King, Department Service Officer for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Pennsylvania, sits down with Kim Portser, Regional Director of the Veterans Leadership Program (VLP), to discuss one of the most important issues affecting veterans today.
Produced in partnership with the Veterans Breakfast Club, this conversation shines a light on the hidden realities of veteran homelessness, food insecurity, financial hardship, and the barriers many veterans face—especially those living in rural Pennsylvania. Together, they explain how organizations like the Veterans Leadership Program, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), county veteran service offices, and the VFW work together to connect veterans with safe housing, employment assistance, healthcare resources, food programs, and long-term support.
Kim shares how the Veterans Leadership Program has been helping veterans for decades by providing emergency housing assistance, case management, financial counseling, food distribution, and personalized support designed to help veterans regain independence and build lasting stability. The discussion also highlights VLP's monthly Military Share food distribution program, which provides hundreds of veterans with nutritious food while creating opportunities for fellowship, camaraderie, and community connection.
The conversation explores why so many veterans hesitate to ask for help, how pride and isolation often prevent people from reaching out, and why every veteran deserves support regardless of their background or VA eligibility. Jessica and Kim emphasize that asking for help is a sign of strength—not weakness—and encourage veterans, family members, friends, and community members to recognize the warning signs before a housing crisis develops.
Whether you're a veteran looking for assistance, a family member trying to help a loved one, or someone who wants to support those who served our nation, this episode provides valuable information about the programs and organizations making a real difference in veterans' lives every day.
If you or someone you know is struggling with housing, food insecurity, or accessing veteran benefits, don't wait until it becomes a crisis. Reach out—help is available.
