Welcome back to Infinite Threads. I’m your host Bob.This week, we’re doing something different.I don’t want to spend five days simply talking about empathy, kindness, connection, and all the things we usually explore here.I want to test some of them.So welcome to The Infinite Threads Experiment.Five episodes. Five small experiments. Nothing dangerous, nothing expensive, and unless I’ve badly misjudged humanity, nothing that should get any of us arrested. 😂The idea is simple. Each day, I’m going to give you one thing to try.Not because I have some scientific study going on in the background with people in white coats watching us through one-way glass. This is more personal than that.I want to see what happens when we deliberately change one small part of the way we move through an ordinary day.And today’s experiment may be the simplest one of the week.Notice the person nobody notices. You probably already know who I mean. The person cleaning the floor while everyone walks around them. The employee gathering carts in the parking lot.The delivery driver dropping something at the door and disappearing before we’ve even opened it.The person behind the counter who has become part of the machinery of the place in our minds. We see the uniform. We see the job.Sometimes we don’t really see the person.I caught myself doing this once.I was somewhere waiting in line, probably thinking about whatever enormously important thing I had convinced myself I needed to accomplish next. There was a worker nearby doing some fairly thankless task.I don’t remember exactly what it was. That’s part of the point.I barely registered him. Then somebody ahead of me said something to him.Nothing dramatic. They used his name. The man looked up and smiled. And suddenly he wasn’t part of the background anymore. He was a guy with a name. That stayed with me.Because I realized how easily people can become scenery to us.Not because we’re cruel. Most of the time, we’re just busy. We’re thinking about dinner. We’re checking the phone. We’re trying to remember whether we locked the car.Our own story is running so loudly that everybody else becomes part of the set.So today, we’re going to interrupt that. Here’s the experiment. At some point during your day, deliberately notice somebody you normally would have passed without much thought. That’s all.You do not have to launch into a deep conversation. Please don’t corner some terrified grocery employee and announce that a podcast has instructed you to explore their inner life. 😂This isn’t about making anyone uncomfortable. It’s about recognition.Make eye contact if it feels appropriate.Say hello.Say thank you and actually mean it.If there’s a name tag, use the person’s name naturally. If somebody is doing something that makes your day easier, acknowledge it.And then pay attention to what happens. Not only to them.To you. That’s the experiment.Because I suspect something interesting happens when we deliberately turn a background person into a foreground person. The whole scene changes. The cashier isn’t just the final obstacle between us and the parking lot. They’re somebody who has been standing there for hours dealing with hundreds of little pieces of other people’s lives. The custodian isn’t simply part of the building. They’re the reason the building works better than it would if nobody did that job.The person delivering our food has a life that existed before they pulled into the driveway and will continue after they leave. We know all of that intellectually. The experiment is to remember it in the moment. That distinction matters. We can believe that every person has value and still move through half the day as though other people are furniture.Humans are funny that way.Our beliefs and our attention are not always in the same place. And attention may be one of the most underrated forms of care we have.Think about the difference between someone saying “thanks” while looking at their phone and someone looking at you and saying it.Same word.Completely different experience. One is almost automatic. The other says, for half a second, “I know there is a person standing here.”That can matter more than we realize. There’s also a reason I’m starting our experiment week here. We’ve talked a lot recently about seeing beyond our own story. This is what that looks like when we take it out of the podcast and put it in a parking lot.It doesn’t always begin with some enormous act of compassion.Sometimes it begins because we stop walking long enough to notice another human being. And something else may happen.Once you deliberately start looking, you may realize how many people around you are doing small things that hold everyday life together.Somebody stocked the shelf.Someone cleaned the restroom.A person took the trash away.Somebody came in before sunrise and turned on the lights. Most of those things become visible only when they don’t happen. That’s strange, isn...
