  • Planting Trees for Better Wine: Biodiversity, Balance & Profit (w/ Enrico Rivetto & Stefano Lorenzi)
    Jan 28 2026

I sat down with Enrico Rivetto (biodynamic winemaker in Barolo) and Stefano Lorenzi (arborist and manager at Castello di Grumello winery) to explore a growing movement in vineyard farming: vitiforestry (agroforestry in the vines). We break down why growers are bringing trees back into vineyards, what problems they’re trying to solve, and what a “more diverse” vineyard actually looks like in practice. We also dig into the practical questions growers worry about most: choosing the right species, managing wild animals, disease risk, and whether trees get in the way of mechanization. Finally, we look at how you measure if it’s working, what the real trade-offs are, and whether agroforestry could be a blueprint for other monocultures too.Enrico's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rivetto_wines/Stefano's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stlorenzi72/Castello di Grumello Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/castellodigrumello/Stefano's arborist website: https://www.arboricoltorestefanolorenzi.it/Rivetto winery website: https://www.rivetto.it/You can also listen to the No Sediment Wine Podcast and 'Talk Under the VVine' episodes on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Amazon Music, Google Podcasts and Castbox. Some of the WINE ACCESSORIES I use regularly:🍷 My Everyday Go-To Wine Glass: https://amzn.to/3OAQAcW🥂 My Favorite Champagne Wine Glass: https://amzn.to/3qhMLRF🥂 One of My Favorite Wine Glasses: https://amzn.to/3uG8Nfc🧳 The Best Wine Travel Suitcase: https://bit.ly/3Zlzuoq (Use code NOSEDIMENT10 for 10% discount)🗜️ I Preserve My Wines with CORAVIN: https://amzn.to/3O1AYPS🪡 CORAVIN Vintage Needle: https://amzn.to/4eVf8bl🐚 CORAVIN Gas Capsules: https://amzn.to/4eVf8bl🍾 I Safely Open Older Bottles with This Cork Puller: https://amzn.to/3iBrFZZ🍾 The Durand Cork Puller: https://amzn.to/3ZuRWfv🏳️ I Polish My Wine Glasses with This Cloth: https://amzn.to/3izWJcx 🪣 My Favorite Wine Chiller: https://amzn.to/4eVf8bl👝 I Safely Transport Bottles With This Sleeve: https://bit.ly/3B8lFBQBe sure to SUBSCRIBE to my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@NoSediment, as I am posting weekly videos on all things wine and monthly wine podcast episodes. **LET’S CONNECT: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blancdenoir/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/blancdenoir TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@nosediment #wineeducation #winepodcast #wine *CONTENTS OF THIS VIDEO0:00 Introduction01:50 What is vitiforestry / agroforestry?05:06 Introducing trees in the vineyard and their importance11:22 Impact of trees and bushes on attracting animals and birds16:37 Choosing the right species to plant in the vineyard23:19 Is agroforestry applicable to other monocultures?25:46 Management of wild animals with trees in the vineyard29:57 How do we know that the introduction of trees will actually work?33:10 Possible cons of introducing trees in the vineyard39:10 Cover crops and soil type41:06 Can trees increase the risk of disease?47:13 Financial sustainability: investing in trees in vineyards57:30 Do trees create obstacles for mechanization?01:00:26 The myth of copper accumulation01:02:59 What trees would Enrico have planted if he’d had this knowledge from the beginning?01:04:20 Why did Stefano choose agroforestry? As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
