USS Narwhal (SS-167): The Secret Mission to Negros | October 19, 1944
On October 19, 1944, just one day before General Douglas MacArthur's forces landed on Leyte, an American submarine surfaced off the coast of Japanese-occupied Negros Island. Her mission wasn't to sink enemy ships. It was to deliver the weapons, ammunition, and supplies that could help turn a guerrilla resistance into a fighting force.
USS Narwhal (SS-167) was no ordinary submarine. One of the Navy's enormous prewar V-boats, she had found a remarkable new purpose in the Pacific War: secretly supplying Filipino guerrillas behind Japanese lines.
Operating as part of the clandestine SPYRON submarine missions, Narwhal carried out a dangerous rendezvous near Calipapa, delivering fifty tons of military supplies while evacuating twenty-six people from occupied territory.
How did a 371-foot American submarine approach an enemy-held island, unload a massive cargo, and escape without attracting Japanese attention? And what role did these secret submarine operations play in the liberation of the Philippines?
In this episode of Patrol Reports, we revisit Narwhal's fifteenth war patrol and uncover a lesser-known chapter of World War II submarine history, when victory was measured not in ships sunk, but in resistance fighters supplied and lives brought to safety.
