My First Year as a Father is an interview-style podcast that centers on the often unheard stories of fatherhood. By listening to these men speak openly and honestly about their own journeys – the doubts, the fears, the transformations – the listener experiences something that rarely exists elsewhere: real conversations about what it actually feels like to become a father and adjust to an entirely new reality.

The first year doesn't just change your life—it rewires you. Fathers share how their perspective on life, on themselves, and on what matters fundamentally changes. They open up about wrestling with their own past, breaking inherited cycles, and discovering what it means to truly show up for their kids.

Through these conversations, listeners find themselves in these stories and discover that the first year of fatherhood is far more complex, demanding and transformative than they imagined.

  • Jeff Pearlman: Diapers, “Class Mom,” and Showing Up as a Dad
    5 Oct 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Hosts Sophia and AC interview New York Times bestselling author and sportswriter Jeff Pearlman about his commitment to being an involved, equal parent. Jeff describes growing up with a quiet, creative, deeply kind father who influenced him, then shares how he aimed to be even more hands-on, from diapers to being “class mom.” He recounts his daughter's birth and her terrifying febrile seizures along with his intense early-parent anxiety, contrasting that with his calmer wife, who’s a social-worker and has written books on parenting. Jeff discusses raising a laid-back son, his kids’ sibling bond, his dislike of overcompetitive sports parenting, and how journalism skills like listening and creativity translate into parenting through constant games and engagement. Now an empty nester, he misses daily kid life and talks with his children often.

Hosts A.C. and Gabbie interview Judah Andrews, an Atlanta-based circus arts performer and aura photography business owner with his wife, Charlie, about his first year of fatherhood after welcoming their son Jasper in September 2025. Judah shares growing up in Anchorage, Alaska, moving to Atlanta, and spending 15 years performing (juggling, unicycling, contact juggling). He recounts the tragic deaths of close friends, how grief led him to Charlie, and how her focus on “tribe” helped him confront commitment fears. Judah describes Jasper’s birth: a planned birth complicated by severe postpartum bleeding and retained placenta, with hours of interventions. He discusses early fatherhood anxiety, sleep deprivation, moments of anger and overwhelming love, reflections on his own father, and learning to ask for help and rest.

  • Ben Krejci: Choosing Fatherhood, From IVF to Violet
    7 Sep 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Hosts Sophia and AC Valdez interview Ben Krejci, a Pittsburgh-based software engineer. He’s also the husband of Casey Georgi, who hosts our sister show “My First Year As A Mother.” Ben shares his upbringing in Central New Jersey with therapist parents, a younger brother, and an adoptive father he describes as gentle and thoughtful, and a highly involved mother who fostered openness. After they decided to become parents, Ben and Casey decided to pursue IVF with genetic testing to avoid passing on osteogenesis imperfecta, a dominant brittle-bone disease common in his family, which prompted ethical questions and grief for Ben’s mother. He describes the intensity of IVF, pregnancy scares, Casey’s difficult induction leading to a C-section, and the exhilaration and responsibility of bringing their daughter Violet home. He discusses sleep deprivation, routine changes, physical play, communication with Casey, four months of paternity leave, easing back to work, and advice to prioritize communication and give each other grace.

Also hear Casey’s Story - Ben’s wife, Casey Georgi, was the very first guest on our companion series, My First Year as a Mother. In her episode, Casey shares her own perspective on their journey into parenthood—from IVF and pregnancy to birth, identity, and navigating the emotional and physical realities of her first year as a mother.
