  • The Children of Hamelin: The Day the Town Stopped Counting
    6 Oct 2026

In 1592, a traveller looked up at a stained-glass window in Hamelin's Market Church and copied down what it showed: a man in clothes of many colors, surrounded by small figures in white. The window was already three hundred years old. Long before the rats and the broken bargain, the town's own records held something stranger and simpler. A date, a number, a piper, and a hill outside the walls. Tonight we follow the oldest accounts of the Pied Piper back to the summer of 1284, through a stone at the town gate, a lane where music is still forbidden, and the historians who think the children were not stolen at all. They may have been recruited.

  • The Green Children of Woolpit: A Land Where the Sun Never Rose
    13 Oct 2026

At harvest time in 12th-century Suffolk, reapers found a boy and a girl standing at the mouth of an old wolf pit. Their skin was green. Their clothes were made of cloth no one could name, and they spoke a language no one understood. They refused all food until someone brought in raw beans. Two chroniclers recorded what happened next. One was a historian famous for exposing fakes, who admitted the witnesses were too many to ignore. Tonight we follow the green children from the fields of Woolpit to a knight's manor, through the girl's account of Saint Martin's Land, and into the theory that ties them to a battle, a river, and a village a few miles away.

  • The Hexham Heads and the Creature on the Stairs
    28 Sep 2026

Anne Ross woke to find a tall, fur-covered figure in her bedroom doorway. Its upper body reminded her of a wolf, while the lower half had the shape of a man. When it moved away, she got out of bed and followed it downstairs. Elsewhere in the house, two small carved heads sat in a box. Unearthed by two brothers in a Hexham garden in 1971, the faces had already become associated with broken household objects and an animal-like visitor in the home next door.

Ross had spent years studying beliefs in which carved heads could guard a home or hold a power beyond death. Her daughter later described a dark figure on the same staircase, despite having been told nothing about her mother’s encounter. Both recalled feeling compelled to follow it. As researchers examined the objects, questions about their origins became entangled with experiments and an increasingly uncertain trail of handovers. The heads eventually disappeared, leaving open the possibility that someone still possesses them without knowing the history of the two faces brought into their home.
