"For families who build businesses, and businesses that strengthen families” Running a business with family is one of the most rewarding things you can do. It's also one of the hardest. The Family in Business podcast is for Australian family business owners who want to grow a thriving, profitable business together - without letting it strain the relationships that matter most. Each week, hosts Mark and Caroline Creedon share honest conversations, practical strategies, and real-world insights drawn from over three decades of experience helping family businesses across Australia grow, scale, and plan for the future. Whether you're just starting to bring family into the business, trying to scale without burning out, navigating the tricky dynamics of working with a spouse or a sibling, or thinking seriously about succession and passing things on to the next generation - this show is built for you. Mark and Caroline cover the full family business journey: building systems that give you back your time, having the conversations most families avoid, creating a business that can run without you, and building wealth that carries across generations. This isn't a podcast about business in theory. It's about what actually works when the people around the boardroom table are also the people around the dinner table. • Has Your Family Business Partner Become Your Complaint Department?
    27 Oct 2026

Is your business partner also the person who gets every problem you’ve got, dropped on them the moment you walk in the door?

If you work with your husband, wife, brother, sister or best mate, you’re probably each other’s first call, last call and only sounding board. That works for a while. Then one of you starts dreading the words “Got a minute?”

In this episode of The Family in Business, Caroline and I take the conversation a little further from last week's episode about the Conversation Code.

We talk about a simple shift in how you approach problems with your business partner, why being each other's only sounding board isn't always healthy, and how constantly stepping in to fix things can create dependency and resentment.

And sometimes, the most useful thing you can do for your business partner isn't to solve their problem at all.

We also explore how the same approach can help you build a team that thinks for itself rather than relying on you for every answer.

Because the whole point of building a business with someone you care about is to create something great together, not let the business drive you apart.

    In today’s episode, you’ll discover:

    • 01:00 - Why bringing a possible solution changes the conversation
    • 02:57 - The difference between needing to vent and asking someone to solve a problem
    • 05:36 - Why being each other's only sounding board can become exhausting
    • 08:30 - The questions to consider before taking a problem to your partner
    • 10:59 - How always being the fixer can create dependency and resentment
    • 14:04 - A simple question that encourages your team to think for themselves

  • The 5-Step Conversation Code For Family Business Partners
    20 Oct 2026

When you're in business with your husband, wife or someone you're close to, it's pretty easy for business conversations to take over everything.

Before you know it, you're talking about cash flow over dinner, team problems on the weekend, or trying to sort out a business issue when your partner really doesn't want to hear about it.

And here's the thing. Those conversations need to happen. You've got a business to run, clients to look after and decisions to make.

But when and how you have those conversations can make an enormous difference to both your business and your relationship.

Caroline and I have been in business together for 15 years and married for 20, and believe me, we don't always get it right!

In this episode, we're sharing something we've developed called the Conversation Code, a simple five-step process to help family business partners have better conversations, work through problems and actually get things done.

We share a rather interesting moment from our own week when some well-intentioned advice from Caroline didn't quite land the way she'd hoped.

We also talk about why having regular, structured meetings matters, even when there are only two of you in the business, and why some business partners keep discussing the same problems without ever getting them resolved.

Because being in business with someone you care about should bring you closer together, not push you further apart.

    In today’s episode, you’ll discover:

    • 01:15 - Why business conversations start taking over your personal life
    • 01:57 - Why when and how you communicate matters more than what you say
    • 04:41 - How the right advice at the wrong time can create unnecessary tension
    • 06:40 - Why even a two-person family business needs structured meetings
    • 10:38 - The five-step Conversation Code for working through business problems
    • 15:10 - Why business meetings fail when nobody takes ownership
    • 16:35 - Why bringing solutions instead of problems changes the conversation

  • Your Family Business Standards Are Failing. Here’s the Fix.
    13 Oct 2026

You know what great service looks like in your business.

But does everyone on your team see it the same way?

And more importantly, can they deliver it consistently when you’re not there?

It’s something we see in family businesses all the time. The owners know exactly how they want clients looked after, but somewhere between what they’re expecting and what the team actually delivers, things can get a little patchy.

    And that’s where problems start.

In this episode, Caroline and I talk about how to make great service something your whole team can deliver, not just the people who’ve been around long enough to know how you like things done.

We share some practical examples from our own businesses, including a simple bottle of water that made a surprising difference, and why giving your team the right level of responsibility can completely change how they handle clients.

We also look at what happens when things don’t go to plan, because let’s face it, no business gets everything right all the time.

The important thing is what happens next.

If you’re running a family business and want your team delivering consistently great service without everything coming back to you, this is a conversation worth having.

    In today’s episode, you’ll discover:

    • 00:38 – Why having good people doesn’t automatically mean consistent service
    • 02:49 – Why what’s obvious to you might not be obvious to your team
    • 04:36 – What a simple bottle of water can teach you about service standards
    • 07:11 – The difference between saying you deliver great service and actually delivering it
    • 08:46 – How giving your team more responsibility can improve the client experience
    • 12:06 – What to do when your team gets something wrong
    • 14:47 – Why recognising great work is just as important as addressing mistakes
