Made Like His Brothers is a podcast exploring Jesus, the true God and true man, and his rescue of humanity from sin, death, and the devil.

Hosted by Nick Mercer.

Taking its name from Hebrews 2, where Jesus is described as being "made like his brothers in every respect", this podcast is an ongoing pursuit of the apostles' original message, read in its own historical and Jewish context. That includes taking seriously the Bible's own supernatural worldview: a cosmos of real spiritual powers, and a Messiah whose work reaches all the way into human nature itself, not merely its record before God.

We'll engage in close readings of Scripture, deep dives into individual doctrines, and conversations with guests along the way.

New episodes drop every Thursday, plus the occasional extra video or livestream on the YouTube channel. Subscribe if you'd like to follow along.

  • The New Testament Reveals the Apostles' Understanding of Forgiveness | Made Like His Brothers 005
    29 Oct 2026

What is the gospel, and would you recognize the apostles' version of it if it were preached in your church this Sunday?

In this episode, we look at what the New Testament says forgiveness rests on. Following the pattern of God's character and authority from the Old Testament, we survey Mark 2, Luke 18, the evangelistic sermons in Acts, and Colossians 3, and see that forgiveness is tied to Jesus's authority, exalted at the Father's right hand. This episode is a survey of general NT references to God's character, authority, and forgiveness. The passages on Christ's death and resurrection and forgiveness come later in the series, after we look at the sacrificial system.

    In this episode:

    - Who has the authority to forgive sins (Mark 2)

    - What the tax collector in Luke 18 actually asks for, and what Jesus says happens

    - What the evangelistic sermons in Acts say about forgiveness, and what they don't

    - Who the apostles blame for the crucifixion

    - What "the name of Jesus" means in Acts

    Passages mentioned:

    Exodus 34:6-7; Mark 2:1-17; Matthew 9:1-13; Luke 18:9-14; Hebrews 2:17; Acts 2:14-40; Acts 3:12-26; Acts 4:5-12; Acts 7; Acts 10:28-47; Acts 13:16-41; Acts 17:22-35; John 14:6-7; Colossians 3:12-17

  • The Old Testament Reveals Our Problem Is With God's Mercy | Made Like His Brothers 004
    23 Oct 2026

Why would a prophet be angry that God forgives? Jonah ran from Nineveh because he knew God is "gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love," and he did not want Nineveh to receive it. If you were in trouble because of your own sin, what would you appeal to? Across the Psalms, Isaiah, Numbers, Micah, and Jonah, God's people appeal to the same thing: Yahweh's character, His hesed and emet toward those who belong to Him. In this episode, we trace that through the Old Testament, and ask what it tells us about the basis of God's forgiveness, why that forgiveness doesn't always remove consequences, and why His mercy is so often where we struggle.

    In this episode:

    - Psalm 103: forgiveness as a benefit of life with Yahweh

    - Psalm 130: "If you should mark iniquities, who could stand?" and what the psalmist appeals to

    - Isaiah 55: forgiveness "without price," and what "my ways are higher than your ways" is actually answering

    - Numbers 14: forgiven, with consequences, and Moses's appeal to God's honor

    - Micah 7: bearing Yahweh's indignation, and justice that includes mercy

    - Jonah: why he was angry, and God's question that ends the book

    - Where we go next: the New Testament

    Passages mentioned: Psalm 103; Psalm 130; Isaiah 55; Numbers 14:11-25; Micah 7:8-10, 18-20; Jonah 4; Exodus 34:6-7

  • What Is God Like? Exodus 32-34, The Golden Calf, and God's Self Description | Made Like His Brothers 003
    16 Oct 2026

When Moses asks to see God's glory, God answers by telling him who He is. If you asked God what He is like, what would He say? In Exodus 32–34, Moses experiences God relenting from disaster twice while still upholding consequences, offers God two options for forgiving Israel, and then hears God proclaim His own name. In this episode, we look at what that tells us about the basis of God's forgiveness, and ask how well each of last episode's two views fits it.

    In this episode:

    - Why we're starting with God's own description of Himself

    - The golden calf (Exodus 32): how Moses experiences mercy and punishment in the same event

    - Moses's two options, "just forgive them" or "blot me out," and why God declines both (Exodus 32:30-35, Romans 9:3)

    - Exodus 33: God relents a second time, and Moses asks to see His glory

    - Exodus 34:6-7, the "Thirteen Attributes of Mercy": hesed, emet, and what "by no means clear the guilty" means

    - Forgiveness and consequences: how Deuteronomy and Ezekiel 18 correct Israel's misunderstanding of God's justice and mercy

    - What God shows Moses, and what He doesn't: a character to trust rather than a mechanism

    Passages mentioned: Exodus 32:30-35; Exodus 33:1-23; Exodus 34:6-7; Deuteronomy 7:9-10; Deuteronomy 24:16; Ezekiel 18:19-24; Romans 9:3; Isaiah 55:6-9
