Today, I want to talk to you about how love lights up the inner darkness of my life. What I've learned is that doing the heavy lifting of love has required of me a vigorous self-awareness, a stringent self-awareness: looking at my reality inside, not pretending, not denying, not hiding, and not projecting it out to others.
When Jesus said, "If you look at a woman to lust after in your heart, you've committed adultery," His goal was never to bring shame or blame, but to lead us in a very specific self-awareness. He’s saying: "Get in touch with your inner world. Look at yourself. Bring love into that dark space inside of you."
I confront the latent racism, inner bigotry, and misogynistic patriarchal attitudes we harbor inside, the "psychological virus" that others can feel even when we don't speak it. Saying "I'm not a racist" is just lazy. We have to look at what that dark thing is in us, call it for what it is, and welcome love into our inner living room.
I want those inner frat boys and dark corners exposed to the lights coming on. When love arrives, it creates a value system for all people so that everyone around us is safe. Join me in taking a deep breath, climbing this mountain one step at a time, and letting the illumination of love push out the darkness.
