  • We Gather: Art, Activism and Community with Jen Bloomer, W. Kamau Bell, Courtney Martin, Wendy MacNaughton, Stephanie Balon, Kate Schatz, & Cava Menzies
    3 Nov 2026

In this episode, we're sharing a conversation from the opening night of our current art exhibition by Jen Bloomer. The new show, entitled We Gather, features a series of hand-drawn prints Jen made in collaboration with activists and community builders from the Bay and beyond. On opening night, we hosted a panel with some of those people, including W. Kamau Bell, Wendy MacNaughton, Stephanie Balon, and Kate Schatz, moderated by Courtney Martin. We began with a collective song and sound-making exercise with musician Cava Menzies, and then talked about creative practice, community gathering, and collective action with this inspiring group of people. If you're in Oakland, come by the shop and see Jen's work on the walls. Twelve of those prints will be part of Jen's 2027 calendar, which is available for pre-order now.

This event took place on October 14th, 2026, at Local Economy. Just a note that the audio quality on this episode is a little less consistent due to some technical issues we had that night.

  • Natalie Foster and Alexandra Romanoff on the romance of UBI
    2 Nov 2026

Alexandra Romanoff's Big Fan is a romance novel in which a political strategist falls for her teenage pop star crush — and spends the book trying to get him to endorse a universal basic income campaign. It's been praised by Vogue and EW. It's also, quietly, one of the best pop-culture arguments for guaranteed income in recent memory. The novel takes the policy seriously and portrays its political challenges honestly.

In this podcast episode, Romanoff talks with author and advocate (and Local Economy member!) Natalie Foster, author of the book,The Guarantee: Inside the Fight for America's Next Economy. She's spent the last decade contending with the policy questions of a guaranteed income.

The pair discussed leveraging pop culture to push for policy change, the complexity of fandom, and the possibility of living into a different kind of future before it has fully arrived.

This episode was recorded live at Local Economy on October 17.

  • Miriam Pawel and Frances Dinkelspiel on California Dreams, a history of the University of California
    16 Oct 2026

In this episode, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Miriam Pawel talks with Berkeleyside co-founder Frances Dinkelspiel about her new book, California Dreams, an epic history of the University of California, its sweeping social impact, and its hopeful lessons about endurance in troubled times. They cover the university's founding in Oakland, the women who were admitted almost from the start, the families and first-generation students whose lives it transformed, the rivalry that gave rise to UCLA, Clark Kerr's master plan, and the funding pressures facing UC today. Local historian Liam O'Donoghue of East Bay Yesterday introduces the evening.

Miriam Pawel spent 25 years as a reporter and editor at Newsday and the Los Angeles Times, and is the author of The Browns of California and The Crusades of Cesar Chavez. Frances Dinkelspiel is the author of Towers of Gold and Tangled Vines: Greed, Murder, Obsession, and an Arsonist in the Vineyards of California.

This conversation was recorded live on October 7, 2026, at Local Economy, a member-supported community space, in Oakland, California. Because of technical difficulties, the recording ends a little early. (Whoops! We're still learning!)
