  • Do You Still Need That Big House? Downsizing After the Kids Leave
    27 Oct 2026

When you bought your house, you probably needed room for the kids, a good school district, a backyard, and enough space for the whole family.

But the kids are grown now. Maybe they've moved out, and you're left with extra bedrooms, closets full of stuff, and a house that still needs cleaning, repairing, and maintaining.

So does it still make sense to stay?

In this episode of Life After the Nest, we're talking about whether downsizing is actually a smart move, or whether staying in the family home might make more sense.

We'll get into the financial side, the emotional attachment to a house full of memories, and the practical realities of moving somewhere new.

I'll also talk about some of the things worth considering when relocating to another state, drawing on my experience moving from New Jersey to Florida with Cheryl.

And what happens if you're ready to move, but your spouse has absolutely no interest in leaving?

There's no single right answer here. A smaller house isn't automatically better, and staying put isn't automatically a mistake.

The question is whether your home still works for the life you want to live.

I'd love to hear your experience. Have you downsized, relocated, or decided to stay in the family home? Let me know what influenced your decision.

  • Starting Over After 50: Is It Too Late to Make a Big Change?
    20 Oct 2026

Who says you can't start over after 50?

Maybe you're thinking about moving somewhere new, changing careers, starting a business, or making a major change in how you live.

The problem is, making those decisions at 55 or 60 isn't quite the same as making them at 25. You've spent decades building your career, your relationships, your finances, and your routines. Walking away from what's familiar can be a pretty big deal.

In Episode 9 of Life After the Nest, we're talking about what it really means to start over later in life.

Why do we become more hesitant to make changes as we get older? How do you know whether you're making a smart decision or taking an unnecessary risk? What happens when your spouse doesn't share your enthusiasm? And what if you make the change and things don't work out?

I'll also share some of my own experiences with moving from New Jersey to Florida and building a business later in life.

I don't believe there's some magic age when we're supposed to stop trying new things. But I also don't believe every big idea is automatically a good one.

The question isn't whether you're too old.

It's whether the change makes sense for you.

If you've been considering a major change in your life, this is a conversation worth having.

Life After the Nest is about figuring out what comes next after the kids are grown. We talk about marriage, relationships, family, personal growth, travel, and the challenges and opportunities that come with this stage of life.

  • You Saved for Retirement. But Are You Forgetting to Live? | Episode 8
    13 Oct 2026

You've spent decades working, raising kids, paying bills, and saving for retirement.

But at what point do you actually start enjoying the money you've worked so hard to save?

In Episode 8 of Life After the Nest, we're talking about the balance between being financially responsible and actually enjoying life after 50.

Why is it sometimes easier to spend money on our adult children than on ourselves? Are we putting off trips, hobbies, and experiences because we genuinely can't afford them, or because we've spent so many years saving that spending makes us uncomfortable?

We'll also talk about helping adult children financially, choosing experiences over possessions, and why waiting until retirement to do everything you've always wanted might not be the best plan.

I'm not suggesting anyone drain their retirement accounts or throw financial responsibility out the window. That's ridiculous.

But I do think there's a difference between planning for the future and putting your entire life on hold waiting for it.

And here's the bigger question: What are we actually saving for?

Whether you're approaching retirement, already retired, married, single, divorced, or widowed, this is a conversation worth having.

I'd love to hear what you think. What's something you've wanted to do but keep putting off because of the money?

Life After the Nest is about figuring out what comes next when the kids are grown and life starts changing. We're talking about the real stuff: relationships, family, money, friendships, travel, and everything else that comes with this stage of life.

The kids are grown. Now what?

  • Why Is It So Hard to Make Friends at This Age?
    6 Oct 2026

Making friends seemed a lot easier when the kids were younger.

School, sports, neighborhoods, birthday parties — there were a hundred built-in reasons to keep seeing the same people. Then the kids grow up, people move, routines change, and some friendships just fade.

In Episode 7 of Life After the Nest, I’m talking about what friendship looks like in this stage of life.

Why is it so easy to meet people but so much harder to actually become friends?

Why are men sometimes especially bad at maintaining friendships?

What happens when one spouse is more social than the other?

And how do you turn someone you know casually into an actual friend?

I also talk about what Cheryl and I have learned from moving to Florida and having to rebuild parts of our social life from scratch.

This episode gets into changing friendships, one-sided relationships, couple friends, making the first move, and one question I think matters more than all the others:

Am I being a good friend?

Because most of us want better friendships. But better friendships usually require somebody to go first.

  • When the Kids Leave and You Feel Like Strangers
    29 Sep 2026

When the kids leave, it can suddenly become very obvious how much of your relationship revolved around raising them.

You spent years being Mom and Dad. Then the house gets quiet, the schedules disappear, and it is just the two of you again.

For some couples, that feels exciting.

For others, it feels a little strange.

You may still love each other very much and still realize that you have become disconnected somewhere along the way.

In this episode of Life After the Nest, we talk about what happens when the kids move out and you start wondering whether you really know the person sitting across from you anymore.

We get into drifting apart, getting to know each other again, finding new things to enjoy together, dealing with different expectations for this stage of life, and figuring out what you both want your marriage to look like now.

The goal is not to get your old marriage back.

It is to build the next version of it together.
