Aging, healthcare, and retirement planning are topics many people avoid—until a crisis forces the conversation. In this episode of Let’s Move to California, host Mark Ericson sits down with senior care consultant and registered nurse Cheryl Field, author of PREPARED! A Healthcare Guide for Aging Adults, for a candid, practical discussion every aging adult and caregiver needs to hear.

With 35 years of experience in senior care, Cheryl pulls back the curtain on what the “healthcare system” really looks like for older adults—and why it often fails families who are unprepared. From navigating emergency room visits and understanding who is actually in charge of your care, to choosing between Traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage, this episode breaks down complex topics into clear, actionable guidance.

The conversation also explores the realities of aging at home versus assisted living, why most people experience a slow decline rather than a sudden passing, and how early planning can protect independence, dignity, and family relationships. Cheryl introduces her no-nonsense advocacy framework designed to help listeners ask better questions, avoid costly mistakes, and take control before the inevitable “oh sh*t moment” arrives.

Whether you’re approaching retirement, helping an aging parent, or considering relocation with healthcare in mind, this episode delivers essential insights to help you prepare—not panic.
