Everything in my body said there was no way. With a trip to Portugal days away, I said yes to a last-minute free ticket to Running Man, the race-meets-music-festival in Rome, Georgia. I showed up with an Amazon tent, a Walmart sleeping bag, and no idea why I was there.

In this solo episode, I share what happened when I walked into a crowd of 1,800 strangers and asked one question: why are you here? I talk about the people I met, the words from the speakers that stuck with me, and the half marathon I walked in 97-degree heat. I also come clean about the story I let win when I quit 29029 in 2022.

It’s an episode about starting before you’re ready, deciding the next step instead of the whole mountain, and learning to be stronger than your strongest excuse.

Caroline Turnbull, one of my private coaching clients, spent her first two years of Division I field hockey at Lafayette sick, injured, and convinced someone else needed to fix it. In this conversation, she walks me through the junior-year shift that turned her into a leader, the torn ACL that ended her senior season, and the years after, when a diet she believed in left her severely anemic while doctors kept telling her she was fine.

What struck me most is how many times Caroline thought she had learned the lesson of listening to her body, only to have to learn it again.

A few years ago, Josi and I hired a local guide in Lake Como for a three-hour hike. Josi was ten and not thrilled about it. Silvia Birollo didn't push her and didn't coddle her. She simply walked with her, laughed with her, and got her to the top. I've wanted her on the podcast ever since.

Silvia left school at 17 to support her family after her father's work accident. She spent 18 years at a sewing machine, went back to night school, and built a 20-year accounting career. Then at 50, COVID cut her salary in half. Instead of asking "what should I be," she asked "what am I able to do," and the answer was walk. At 51 she sat in a classroom with people half her age and became a mountain guide.

We talk about shyness, panic, living in a sister's shadow, not becoming a mother, and the mantra that carried her through all of it: nothing is impossible.

Silvia is a big part of why Josi and I are walking the Camino next week. Her story reminded me that the mountain is a metaphor, and some answers only come when you're moving. Her contact info is below if you want to explore Europe on foot with her.
