  • Pearl Harbor: The Attack That Brought America Into World War II
    2 Nov 2026
At 6:45 a.m. on December 7, 1941, USS Ward fired on a suspected Japanese midget submarine outside Pearl Harbor. Seventeen minutes later, Army radar operators at Opana Point tracked a large formation approaching Oahu. Neither warning produced an effective defensive response before Japanese aircraft struck.
This episode examines Pearl Harbor through the documented chain of missed opportunities, command decisions, carrier movements, and combat reports that shaped the attack. It follows Admiral Chuichi Nagumo’s First Air Fleet, attack-group leader Mitsuo Fuchida, Combined Fleet commander Isoroku Yamamoto, and the American commanders, sailors, soldiers, airmen, civilians, and medical personnel caught in the assault.
Japan’s objective was broader than the destruction of American aircraft carriers. The immediate aim was to damage or neutralize the U.S. Pacific Fleet; the operational aim was to gain time for Japan’s southern offensive; and the strategic hope was to discourage or constrain American intervention. The raid badly damaged the battleship force and helped open Japan’s wider campaign, but the fleet carriers were absent, repair facilities largely survived, and the attack brought the United States openly into the war.
Using American action reports, Army records, Japanese operational accounts, postwar investigations, casualty records, and participant testimony, this episode asks what Japan achieved at Pearl Harbor—and what its commanders left behind.

    30 Oct 2026
On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched the D-Day invasion of Normandy across five landing sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The plan depended on each force securing its objectives, but the landings unfolded unevenly. Some troops advanced quickly; others faced fierce resistance, confusion, and heavy losses. This episode follows the Normandy landings from the first assaults on the beaches to the fight to establish a foothold in France. Discover how airborne operations, naval support, infantry, and engineers contributed to the invasion—and why success at one beach could not guarantee success at another. We examine the differences between the five sectors, the challenges facing Allied troops, and how the beachheads connected to the wider campaign to liberate Western Europe. D-Day was not a single charge across one continuous front. It was five difficult landings shaped by different terrain, defenses, and battlefield conditions.Hear the story of Operation Overlord and Operation Neptune, the planning behind the Normandy invasion, and the costly first steps that opened the Allied campaign in France.
