Prayer gets weirdly narrow for a lot of us. We pray when we’re desperate, but we go silent when we’re thriving. Or we sin, feel ashamed, and avoid God altogether. The closing passage of James refuses all three patterns with a clean, bracing command: in all things, pray.
We start with James 5:13-20 and a surprising metaphor from the history of science: the heliostat, a tool that stays pointed at the sun so it can keep reflecting light to the exact place it’s needed. That’s the picture we keep coming back to a life consistently oriented toward God, not just spiritually “in the neighborhood” when things get hard. From there we track James’ three big moves: pray in pain, pray in joy, and pray in moral failure.
Along the way, we talk about suffering in every form, why the church’s elders share responsibility for care, and what anointing with oil likely meant in the ancient world (ordinary medicine, not magic). We challenge the habit of “small” praying with stories that press us toward bold, specific requests, then shift to the hidden dangers of prosperity: pride, forgetfulness, and self-congratulation. Finally, we slow down on confession what it really is, why we hide like Adam and Eve, and why forgiveness is guaranteed when we come to the Father in Jesus’ name.
