DAY 305🔥 “THE UNKNOWN GOD REVEALED”Series: THE CHURCH IS BORN📖 Acts 17A person can be highly educated, deeply religious, intellectually sophisticated, and still be spiritually lost without Jesus Christ! In Acts 17, we follow the Apostle Paul as he carries the gospel into some of the most influential cities of the ancient world. In Thessalonica, he boldly proclaims Jesus Christ from the Scriptures. In Berea, the people eagerly receive his message while carefully examining God's Word to determine whether what he teaches is true. And in Athens, Paul encounters a city filled with philosophers, religious traditions, intellectual achievement, and countless idols. But despite all their wisdom, religious activity, and cultural accomplishments, the people of Athens were missing the most important truth of all. They did not know the one true and living God!As Paul walks through the city, Scripture tells us that his spirit is provoked because Athens is filled with idols. He sees beautiful buildings. Impressive temples. Extraordinary intellectual achievements. But beyond all the accomplishments of this great city, Paul recognizes something far more important. These people desperately need the gospel of Jesus Christ! And that should challenge the way we look at the world around us today. We live in a culture filled with information, education, technology, wealth, and endless opportunities for personal advancement. But possessing knowledge is not the same as possessing truth. And being religious is not the same as being reconciled to God. Eventually, Paul is invited to address the philosophers at the Areopagus. And he begins by referring to something he discovered while walking through Athens. An altar bearing the inscription:"TO THE UNKNOWN GOD."Then Paul makes an extraordinary declaration.📖 Acts 17:23"What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you."What a powerful moment!Paul doesn't tell the Athenians that all their religious beliefs are equally valid. He doesn't suggest that every spiritual path ultimately leads to the same destination. And he doesn't compromise biblical truth to gain the approval of his audience.Instead, he uses their own religious uncertainty as an opportunity to proclaim the one true God.And then he begins explaining who God really is.He is the Creator of heaven and earth. He is the Sustainer of all life.He is sovereign over the nations. He is not dependent upon human beings. And He cannot be contained in temples or represented adequately by images made of gold, silver, or stone.📖 Acts 17:24"The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man."What an extraordinary declaration in a city filled with temples!Paul was reminding the Athenians that the true God is not a product of human imagination. He is the Creator of everything that exists, and He alone is worthy of our worship! But Paul doesn't stop there. He confronts the people with their need for repentance.📖 Acts 17:30"The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent."Notice those words.ALL PEOPLE. EVERYWHERE.The gospel is not simply another philosophy to consider. It is not another religious option to add to our lives. It is God's declaration that sinful humanity must repent and turn to Him through Jesus Christ. And Paul explains why this response is so urgent.God has appointed a day when He will judge the world in righteousness through the One He raised from the dead.Jesus Christ is not merely a religious teacher whose ideas deserve consideration. He is the crucified, risen, and reigning Lord before whom every person will one day stand!🔥 Five powerful lessons from Acts 17:✅ 1. The gospel must always be grounded in God's Word.Paul reasoned from the Scriptures in Thessalonica, demonstrating that Jesus is the promised Messiah who suffered, died, and rose again. Our confidence must rest in biblical truth, not human opinions.✅ 2. Spiritual maturity requires personal examination of Scripture. The Bereans eagerly received Paul's teaching but examined the Scriptures daily to determine whether it was true. Every Christian should develop the same commitment to biblical discernment.✅ 3. Religious activity cannot replace a genuine relationship with God.Athens was filled with temples, altars, and religious devotion. Yet the people did not know the true God. Being religious does not mean someone has experienced salvation through Jesus Christ.✅ 4. The gospel confronts every false worldview and every idol.Paul didn't reshape God's truth to make it acceptable to the philosophers. He proclaimed the Creator, exposed the foolishness of idolatry, and called people to repentance.✅ 5. The resurrection of Jesus Christ demands a response. Some mocked Paul's message. Others wanted to hear more. And some believed. But the truth remained unchanged: God commands all people everywhere to repent. And here's where Acts 17 becomes ...
