In a tough 120-96 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, the Oklahoma City Thunder showcased the challenges and opportunities ahead this season. With major injuries sidelining Alex Caruso, Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, and Cason Wallace, young star Ajay Mitchell seized the spotlight, exploding for 29 points on 12-of-20 shooting and emerging as a key contributor. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander struggled alongside a cold-shooting night from deep, as the team hit only 16% from three and failed to find a spark off a youthful bench.

A key theme that emerged was the critical need for bench production, particularly as the Thunder experiment with new rotations and develop their third unit amid ongoing absences. As Oklahoma City relinquishes its share of the number one spot in the West for the first time since November, the question remains: will fresh faces like Ajay Mitchell continue to step up and ignite another dominant stretch? The race for Western Conference supremacy is wide open.
