Months passed before searchers discovered four of the men dead. The fifth, Gary Mathias, was never found.

But the discoveries only raised more questions.

Why had the men driven into the mountains? Why did they leave a car that still worked? And how did one of them survive for weeks inside a remote trailer where food and heating supplies were available?

  • The Bizarre Death of Cindy James
    18 Oct 2026

For nearly seven years, Canadian nurse Cindy James reported receiving threatening phone calls, disturbing notes, and being physically attacked by someone she couldn't identify.

She moved, changed her name, installed security equipment, and even hired a private investigator. But the incidents she reported continued.

Then, in May 1989, Cindy vanished.

Two weeks later, her body was discovered behind an abandoned house with her hands and feet bound behind her back.

What followed was a complicated investigation that divided police and Cindy's family. Investigators suspected some of the incidents may have been staged, while her loved ones believed someone had been terrorizing her for years.

Even after a lengthy coroner's inquest, Cindy's death remained officially undetermined.

In this episode of Her Strange Hour, we're looking at the evidence, the conflicting accounts, and the questions that remain about what happened to Cindy James.

You can also watch this episode on YouTube, where I've included real photographs of Cindy at the end.

  • The Grand Island Lighthouse Mystery: Two Keepers, Two Unexplained Deaths
    11 Oct 2026

In June 1908, a lighthouse on Michigan's Grand Island went dark. Two men were supposed to be keeping its light burning, but neither was there.

Days later, a small sailboat was discovered on Lake Superior with the body of assistant lighthouse keeper Edward Morrison inside. His injuries raised suspicions, but the official explanation for his death was exposure.

Meanwhile, head keeper George Genry was missing.

As investigators searched for answers, troubling details emerged: belongings left behind, missing wages, reports of a warning letter, and rumors of disagreements at the isolated lighthouse.

More than sixty years later, historian Loren Graham purchased the abandoned lighthouse and discovered an old newspaper clipping that led him into a decades-long investigation.

So what really happened to George Genry and Edward Morrison?

Join Ivy Monroe on Her Strange Hour as we revisit one of Lake Superior's unsettling historical mysteries and the unanswered questions that have lingered since 1908.

Her Strange Hour explores strange history, unsolved mysteries, true crime, and the fascinating lives behind the stories.
