  • S18:E19: 5 Tips for Writing Subplots That Strengthen Your Main Plot
    26 Oct 2026

How do you write subplots without ending up with a story that feels like a collection of disconnected pieces? In this episode, I explore how to write subplots that strengthen the main plot by integrating secondary characters, conflicts, relationships, and themes into one cohesive story.

Subplots can add richness, complexity, and depth. But they aren't necessarily the most useful way to think about story.

The strongest subplots grow out of the same character goals, conflicts, relationships, and thematic questions that shape the main plot—until they become difficult to separate from the story's larger structural throughline.

In this episode, we'll look at:

    • What a subplot actually is—and how it differs from the main plot
    • The difference between subplots and multiple plotlines
    • The three central throughlines of external conflict, relational conflict, and internal conflict
    • Four structural sources from which subplots naturally arise
    • How supporting-character goals create secondary conflicts
    • Why minor antagonists and their goals can deepen the main plot
    • How to test whether a subplot is truly necessary by looking at the Climax
    • Why every subplot should also contribute to the story's theme
    • How color coding can help writers organize complex plotlines
    • How to combine subplot material with main-plot scenes for greater cohesion

Ultimately, the goal isn't to pile more storylines into your novel. What you want to do is create a story in which every thread feels as though it belongs to the same larger pattern.

Or, to put it a little more cheekily:

There are no subplots, just plots.

QUICK PLOTTING GUIDE: Story Structure Beat Sheet & Plot Outline

Before you can tell whether a subplot belongs in your story, you first have to know exactly what your main plot is doing. That's why I created this Quick Plotting Guide: to help writers nail down the central structural throughline from the Hook through the Climactic Moment and Resolution.

  • S18:E18: The 5 Ingredients You Need to Write Subtext in Fiction
    12 Oct 2026

If you've ever wondered how to write subtext without leaving readers confused—or explaining so much that the subtext disappears—these five principles can help.

Subtext is everything a story communicates without saying it outright. It can deepen characters, relationships, dialogue, worldbuilding, and theme by allowing readers to recognize meaning beneath the visible surface of the story.

But this is also what makes story subtext tricky. If writers don't provide enough context, readers have nothing from which to infer the deeper meaning. If writers explain too much, the subtext becomes text.

In this episode, I break down five ingredients that can help writers create subtext deliberately:

    • How subtext arises between known points of context
    • Why the hidden meaning must actually exist in the writer's understanding
    • Why subtext loses its power when writers explain it
    • How contradiction between exterior behavior and interior truth creates depth
    • Why silence can sometimes communicate more than dialogue

We'll look at examples and examine how stories invite audiences to connect the dots for themselves.

    STORY THEME DEVELOPMENT WORKSHEET: https://kmweilandstore.com/b/story-theme-worksheet

Subtext is one of the most powerful ways a story's deeper meaning can emerge without being stated outright. This is especially true of theme.

That's why I created the Story Theme Development Worksheet. I wanted to give writers a practical way to explore what their stories are really about—and how plot, character, symbolism, and thematic questions can work together to create meaning beneath the surface.

  • S18:E17: Character Misdirection: How to Write False Allies and False Enemies
    28 Sep 2026

Character misdirection does more than set up clever betrayals. By using False Allies and False Enemies, writers can deepen conflict, complicate character arcs, and create plot twists that feel both surprising and inevitable.

In this video, I explore four variations of character misdirection: the False Ally, the False Enemy, the False Ally turned True Ally, and the False Enemy turned True Enemy. We'll examine how the gap between characters' apparent and actual allegiances can challenge protagonists' assumptions, develop the thematic conflict, and change the direction of the plot.

    We'll talk about:

    • How False Allies secretly work against protagonists
    • How False Enemies become unexpected sources of help or guidance
    • Why changing allegiances can create meaningful character arcs
    • How character misdirection adds conflict and complexity
    • How revelations about characters' loyalties can turn the plot
    • How to use False Allies and False Enemies to create suspense and effective plot twists

Character misdirection works best when it grows from believable motives, conflicted loyalties, and the protagonist's own limited understanding. When these elements work together, the eventual revelation offers more than surprise: it changes how protagonists and readers understand the story.

WRITING CLASS: Negative Character Arcs: The Hidden Pattern of Self-Deception

    Sign Up Here:
    https://kmweilandstore.com/b/negative-character-arcs-class

Some characters hide their true allegiances from protagonists and readers. Others hide them from themselves. The most convincing downward transformations rarely begin with characters consciously deciding to become villains. They begin with self-deception as characters rationalizing their choices in order to take one seemingly defensible step after another until they have become someone they never intended to be.

In this 70-minute class, I explore the Disillusionment, Fall, and Corruption Arcs as three distinct expressions of a larger negative-transformation pattern. We'll examine characters' changing relationships with the thematic Truth and Lie, the Disillusionment pivot, and the structural progression from the Hook through the Climax and Resolution.

The class premieres October 6 at 1PM EDTime. It is prerecorded, and I'll be live in the chat throughout the presentation to discuss the material and answer questions. A replay will be available afterward.
