What happens when the circumstances you were born into are the very circumstances you're determined to overcome?

In Episode 030 of Going Mach 5, Rashad Thompson sits down with Philadelphia-born recording artist Ayo Modd for an introspective conversation about overcoming adversity, discovering your purpose, and refusing to let your environment dictate your future.

Entering foster care at birth, Ayo grew up navigating questions of identity, belonging, and self-worth while surrounded by circumstances that could have easily led him down a different path. Instead, he chose to break the cycle.

From performing at just 12 years old to going from virtually no support to selling out three concerts in Philadelphia, Ayo reflects on the sacrifices, relationships, and defining moments that transformed him from a follower into a leader.

Now establishing himself in Atlanta, he's expanding beyond music into acting, modeling, and building meaningful industry relationships, all while remaining committed to creating authentic art.

But success is only part of the story.

Rashad and Ayo also explore the emotional consequences of betrayal, the difficulty of trusting after heartbreak, the responsibilities that come with ambition, and whether today's music industry has sacrificed genuine artistry for algorithms, popularity, and numbers.

In this episode, we discuss:

• Growing up in foster care and confronting questions of identity and belonging

• Breaking generational cycles and choosing a different path

• Going from zero supporters to selling out concerts

• Why discipline and consistency matter more than validation

• The difference between chasing fame and building a meaningful career

• Moving from Philadelphia to Atlanta to pursue bigger opportunities

• Collaboration versus competition in the music industry

• Why modern music may be losing its authenticity

• Building generational wealth through entrepreneurship and creativity

• How romantic betrayal changes the way we understand love and trust

• Emotional maturity, self-respect, and recognizing your worth

• Finding purpose through pain and maintaining faith when success feels impossible

This is a conversation about more than music. It's about personal agency, resilience, and the courage to become someone your younger self would be proud of.

What does it actually cost to build a meaningful life in the modern world?

In this episode of Going Mach 5, we have a wide-ranging conversation about capitalism, the shrinking middle class, artificial intelligence, digital money, global power, entrepreneurship, grief, family, and the forces quietly reshaping how we live.

We explore how economic pressure is beginning to influence some of life's biggest decisions, including whether people can afford to have children, pursue their passions, travel, own homes, or simply experience the quality of life previous generations expected. We also discuss the growing divide between the wealthy and everyone else, the idea that "socialism exists for the rich," and why the phrase pull yourself up by your bootstraps may represent an impossible standard.

From there, we look toward the future: China's rise, America's direction, AI's increasing influence, digital currency, and what happens when technology becomes intertwined with money and control.

But this conversation gets deeply personal too.

We reflect on five years since the loss of his mother.

We also get into entrepreneurship, building a beef tallow moisturizer company, and what it means to continue reinventing yourself while the world around you changes.

And finally, we settle one of the most important debates of our generation:

LeBron James vs. Michael Jordan.

Is LeBron the greatest basketball player ever while Jordan remains the most influential? And does LeBron sharing an NBA court with his own son add something to his legacy that we've never seen before?

Money. Power. Technology. Grief. Ambition. Family. Legacy.

From Ridgeland, South Carolina to professional football, the music industry, and more than 85 million views on YouTube — this is a story about what happens when you refuse to let one chapter define you.

In this episode of Going Mach 5, I sit down with a former NFL and CFL athlete whose journey has taken him far beyond the football field. After becoming a 4x First-Team All-American and HBCU Hall of Fame player at Winston-Salem State University, he went on to spend time with the Buffalo Bills and BC Lions before eventually stepping into an entirely different world.

After football, he found himself behind the camera, working as a videographer and photographer alongside some of the biggest artists in music. But a platform he first discovered back in middle school would eventually become one of the biggest opportunities of his life: YouTube.

Today, he's generated more than 85 million views and built an audience of over 70,000 subscribers across his platforms, with faceless YouTube channels becoming a major focus of his business.

We talk about growing up as the oldest of five in South Carolina, feeling like he was always behind, becoming an elite athlete, experiencing professional football, navigating life after the game, entering the music industry, rediscovering YouTube, and learning how to reinvent yourself when the original plan changes.

We also get into how proximity to Atlanta changed the trajectory of his life, the business behind faceless content, and why sometimes your greatest opportunities don't look anything like the future you originally imagined.
