Summary
In early 1916, as the shadows of the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign of World War I lingered, renowned English novelist and poet John Masefield—later honored as Englands Poet Laureate—crafted a poignant account of this pivotal moment in history. Masefield delves into the strategic motivations behind the campaign, the immense logistical hurdles faced, and the staggering challenges that lay ahead. Through his evocative narrative, he captures the fierce combat and unyielding determination of British troops, including many brave Australians and New Zealanders, as they valiantly fought to seize the rugged and inhospitable shores of the Dardanelles from the Turkish forces.
