The Medals, the Shadow Box, and the Girl Who Learned to Lie
    27 Oct 2026
The Medals, the Shadow Box, and the Girl Who Learned to Lie

A wooden shadow box, glass unbroken and velvet dry after a night of heavy rain, held three military medals and a citation for the "112th Mountain Reconnaissance Battalion" - a unit that, investigators later confirmed, never existed. How did a twenty-six-year-old named Laura Vogel spend three years convincing an entire veterans' community she belonged to a past she never lived, and what finally made her walk away at 2:00 a.m. beside the river?

In this episode, we follow the timeline from the river-trail discovery on March 7, 2019 through Laura Vogel's years in Portsmith: her deliberate study of military structure, her purchases of real medals, her active volunteering in veteran programs, and the growing unease among actual veterans. What cost did it take to maintain that constructed life, and what moment ended it?

    Person: Thomas McCarthy
    Date: March 7, 2019 at 6:41 AM
    Person: Laura Vogel, age 26
Unit: 112th Mountain Reconnaissance Battalion (nonexistent)
Medals: Combat Infantryman Badge; Bronze Star with Valor device; Meritorious Service Medal

    - The shadow box was found pressed against the Delancey Wharf grain elevator foundation with its glass unbroken and interior velvet dry despite heavy overnight rain.
    - Thomas McCarthy photographed the box and called the non-emergency line approximately four and a half hours after Laura Vogel had left Portsmith.
    - Laura Vogel moved to Portsmith in spring 2016, driving a used Subaru with Illinois plates and renting a one-bedroom on Clement Avenue.
    - The three medals were legally purchased from a surplus dealer in Columbus and displayed with a citation card aged at the edges and the printed unit name.
    - Gary Green, a 51-year-old Army veteran with two tours in Iraq, first noticed discrepancies in October 2017 and then waited more than a year before acting on his doubts.

  • The Envelope in the Rain: How a $40 Seal Bought Trust

The Envelope in the Rain: How a $40 Seal Bought Trust
    26 Oct 2026
The Envelope in the Rain: How a $40 Seal Bought Trust

A damp manila envelope holding a cream sheet that named a local woman heir to $41,000,000 was found at the base of a gas meter in the rain - and it took five weeks for police to realize the most dangerous thing about it was how it made people feel too embarrassed to question it. How did a forty-dollar raised gold seal, real attorney signatures traced from public filings, and a handful of patient gestures turn a stranger into someone a town relied on?

In this episode, you will hear the sequence of events from that February morning through the investigation, following the person who arrived with two suitcases and a new name, the community ties she built, the document she left in wet grass, and the forensic detail - a nearly-correct name - that unraveled her identity. What was the exact moment the paper stopped being proof and became a weapon?

    Person: Judith Anne Watson (alias)
    Person: Judith Maren Kowalski
    Date: February 19, 2014
    Location: 14 Aldrich Court, Pelham
    Amount: $41,000,000

    - The envelope was found three hours into Larry Fleming’s gas meter route at the base of the meter outside number 14 on February 19, 2014.
    - The inheritance document declared Judith Anne Watson sole heir to Hargrove Capital Partners, LLC with declared assets of $41,000,000.
    - Judith Watson had rented the house at 14 Aldrich Court in cash, paying $8,400 covering several months upfront.
    - She volunteered every Wednesday evening for eleven months at the Pelham Public Library’s adult literacy program with a consistent group of twelve learners.
    - Two of the three attorney signatures on the document were real, traced from public county clerk filings from a Wilmington firm.

  • She Was Their Doctor-Her Diploma Was a Drunk Joke

She Was Their Doctor-Her Diploma Was a Drunk Joke
    25 Oct 2026
She Was Their Doctor-Her Diploma Was a Drunk Joke

Black coffee, a short stack without butter, and a framed diploma that named a medical school that never existed - Millhaven trusted one woman with 500 lives while her degree was the punchline of a prank. What drove a town to accept care from a practitioner whose "Ashford College of Medicine, class of 2005" diploma was invented as a drunk joke, and how did six years pass without anyone checking? Who finally questioned the paper, and what did that reveal about need, trust, and oversight?

In this episode, we follow the timeline from a physician's retirement leaving Millhaven without local care to the arrival of Brenda Jean Jean, her clinic, and the discovery that the college on her diploma never graduated a single class. The episode covers her background working as a clinical assistant, the licensing process that approved her Nebraska medical license, and the moment investigators entered the diner to call her name - but why did the supervisor approve the license despite the missing school?

    Person: Brenda Jean Jean
    Location: Millhaven, Nebraska
Date: January 2014 (diner scene) and spring 2008 (arrival)
Case: Ashford College of Medicine diploma fraud
Status: Nebraska medical license issued despite non-existent school

    - Millhaven's population was about 4,000 and sat roughly 40 miles from the nearest hospital in Ord, Nebraska.
    - Dr. Harold Peck retired in winter 2007 after 31 years, leaving no immediate replacement for 14 months.
    - Brenda Jean arrived in spring 2008 in a nine-year-old Subaru with Illinois plates and acquired the Clement Street clinic for $1 per year rent.
    - Within six months she had 312 patients and within twelve months more than 500 patients trusting her care.
    - The diploma read "Ashford College of Medicine, class of 2005," a school that had never existed and appeared on a fraudulent diploma list.
