In the firelit hall beneath the mere, Beowulf seizes a giant’s sword from the wall. The blade does what Hrunting could not. Grendel’s mother falls. The steel melts in her blood. Beowulf takes the hilt and Grendel’s head and rises through the black water to the men who stayed. A fireside retelling of the public-domain epic.
