Everyone knows the story of RMS Titanic. This time, we’re telling it from the deck of the ship that came looking for her.
When Carpathia received Titanic’s distress call in the early hours of April 15, 1912, Captain Arthur Rostron was nearly sixty miles away. He didn’t know how badly Titanic was damaged, how long she had left, or whether anyone would still be alive when they arrived. He knew only that another ship needed help.
His response was simple: turn around and make all possible speed.
In this episode of Naked History, we follow Carpathia’s desperate race through the North Atlantic as stokers pour coal into the furnaces, engineers push the machinery toward its limits, lookouts search the darkness for the same ice that had already doomed Titanic, and Rostron prepares his entire ship to receive survivors before knowing whether there would be anyone left to save.
