  • Medieval Blood Had A Sense Of Humor - Trivial Travel, Tales & Truths - The Blood Of Dawnwalker
    5 Oct 2026

What did people in the Middle Ages actually think blood was?

In this episode of Entired Retreat – Trivial Travel, Tales & Truths, I wander through the dark medieval world of The Blood of Dawnwalker while talking with AI co-pilot Sky about the strange, fascinating and sometimes disturbing history of how humans understood blood in the medieval era.

Using the atmospheric world of The Blood of Dawnwalker as our backdrop, we travel through centuries of real history: from ancient Greek ideas about the four humors and the enormous influence of Galen, to medieval bloodletting, phlebotomy, medical astrology, religious beliefs surrounding blood, medieval medicine and the gradual discoveries that eventually transformed our understanding of the human circulatory system.

Along the way, we explore questions such as:

    • Why did medieval physicians deliberately remove blood from sick patients?

    • What were the four humors, and why was blood considered one of them?

    • Why could the stars and zodiac influence when a physician decided to perform bloodletting?

    • How did Christianity shape medieval ideas about blood?

    • What did medieval doctors actually understand about veins, arteries and the heart?

    • How did thinkers such as Galen, Ibn al-Nafis and eventually William Harvey change our understanding of circulation?

    • And how did real beliefs surrounding blood, death and decomposing bodies later contribute to European vampire folklore?

This is not a lore explanation or walkthrough of The Blood of Dawnwalker. Instead, the game becomes a virtual landscape through which we explore the real history behind ideas that feel perfectly at home in its dark medieval world.

A mixture of gameplay, history, conversation, documentary storytelling and curiosity — exploring what people once believed, what they actually knew, and how those ideas changed over time.

Entired Retreat – Trivial Travel, Tales & Truths uses games, simulations and virtual worlds as gateways into real history, geography, folklore, science and human stories.
