  • Casual, permanent or somewhere in between? with Amanda Junkeer
    30 Oct 2026

Australia’s casual employment rules have changed, and they’re already being put to the test. Last month, the Fair Work Commission made its first order under the new employee choice pathway, requiring a university to convert a casual academic to part-time.

Amanda Junkeer, Partner at Gadens, joins us to unpack what the new framework means in practice and how HR should handle a casual employee who wants to go permanent.

We also speak with Lisa Mannering FCPHR, who gives us an update on the latest ER/IR news this month, including new procedural changes to how the FWC is handling dismissal cases moving forward, unpacking the Secure Australia Jobs Framework and unpacking a recent tribunal case that looked into what constitutes reasonable adjustments.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • What legally makes someone a casual worker
    • The first employee choice pathway case, and what it tells us
    • Where casual work could be headed
    • Your burning questions, answered
