Welcome back to Infinite Threads. I’m your host Bob.We’re four days into The Infinite Threads Experiment, and today I’m going to ask you to do something that sounds incredibly easy.Do something kind. That part probably isn’t the challenge. Here’s the catch.Tell nobody. No Facebook post.No picture. No casually working it into a conversation three days from now.No mysterious little, “Well, I did something today that restored my faith in humanity, but I’m not going to say what.” Nothing.Just do the kind thing and let it disappear from public view. That is Experiment Number Four. And I’m curious about this one because we live in a time when almost everything can become content.Dinner becomes content.Vacations become content. The dog looking mildly confused becomes content. And sometimes kindness becomes content too. Now, I want to be careful here. There is nothing automatically wrong with sharing a good deed.Sometimes seeing kindness inspires other people to be kind.Sometimes a fundraiser needs publicity.Sometimes telling a positive story reminds people that there is still a lot of goodness happening in the world.I do that myself on this show.So this is not some lecture about how kindness only counts if nobody sees it.It counts. What I want to explore is something a little different. What does kindness feel like when there is absolutely nothing in it for us socially? No praise. No likes. No one saying, “Bob, that was wonderful.”Just the knowledge that somewhere, because of something you did, another person’s day became a little easier.I think that changes the experience.Imagine you’re in a drive-through and quietly pay for the person behind you.You don’t stick around to watch their reaction. You don’t take a picture. You just drive away. For all you know, they may assume the restaurant made a mistake. That’s almost funny. You’ve done something kind and may not even get credit from the person who received it.Would it still feel worthwhile?I hope so.Maybe today it’s not money at all.You put somebody’s cart away when they’re struggling. You leave something helpful where a coworker will find it.You take care of a small task at home that usually falls on somebody else, and when they ask who did it, you resist the temptation to stand under a spotlight and announce your identity. That last one may be the advanced version. There are countless possibilities. But I want the kindness to fit naturally into your day.Don’t go searching for somebody who looks sufficiently unfortunate so you can complete your assignment. That would turn this into something very strange very quickly.Just pay attention. An opportunity will probably appear. And when it does, help because you can. Then keep moving. There’s something about anonymous kindness that removes one of the complications human beings bring into almost everything. The scoreboard. We like being appreciated.Of course we do.It feels good when somebody recognizes what we’ve done. There’s nothing shameful about that. But appreciation can quietly become expectation.I did this for you.Did you notice?Did you appreciate it enough? Will you remember? Are you going to do something for me now? Before long, what started as generosity begins to look a little like an invoice.Anonymous kindness tears up the invoice. There’s nothing to collect. That’s what makes today’s experiment interesting to me.For one moment, the good thing exists entirely for the sake of the good it might do.I think that can teach us something about ourselves.Because if nobody ever knows, we have to sit with a strange little question:Was it enough that it helped? That’s worth thinking about. We’ve talked a lot on Infinite Threads about the ripple effect. How one interaction can move through another person into places we’ll never see.Anonymous kindness may be the purest version of that. You start the ripple and lose track of it immediately.Maybe someone is having an awful day and your small gesture interrupts it.Their mood changes just enough that they’re more patient with somebody else. That person goes home carrying a little less irritation.Something good travels. You’ll never know. And I actually like that.We spend so much of life wanting proof that what we do matters.Today we’re practicing the possibility that something can matter even when we never receive the proof. That feels very close to the heart of this show.Infinite threads means we don’t always get to see where the thread goes. We’re connected to outcomes we may never witness.Sometimes our part is simply to put something decent into motion. There’s another reason this experiment matters now.A lot of what we see online is performative by design.Social media is a stage. That doesn’t mean everything on it is fake. Far from it.But the structure encourages us to show what we’re doing. Here I am.Here’s what I ate. Here’s where I went. Here’s what I think. Here’s what I did.Eventually, even generosity can begin asking for an ...
