DAY 298🔥 “THE GOSPEL SPREADS”Series: THE CHURCH IS BORN📖 Acts 8Sometimes what looks like a setback in our lives becomes an opportunity for God to accomplish something far greater than we could have imagined! In Acts 8, the early church is facing intense persecution following the death of Stephen.Saul is actively seeking to destroy the church. Believers are being arrested, families are being disrupted, and Christians are being scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. From a human perspective, it looks like the church is being torn apart. But something extraordinary happens.📖 Acts 8:4"Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word."The believers were scattered, but the gospel was not silenced! What was intended to stop the message of Jesus Christ actually became the means through which the gospel spread beyond Jerusalem. And the words of Jesus in Acts 1:8 begin unfolding before our eyes. The gospel is moving into Judea and Samaria, just as Christ had promised.🔥 God's mission was never dependent upon comfortable circumstances. His sovereign purposes continued advancing even through persecution! As the chapter unfolds, we meet Philip, one of the seven men selected to serve the church in Acts 6.Philip travels to Samaria and begins proclaiming Jesus Christ. This was significant because Jews and Samaritans had experienced generations of religious and cultural hostility. But the gospel crosses those barriers!People respond to the message.Lives are transformed. And Acts 8:8 tells us:"So there was much joy in that city."The gospel was reaching people who had once been separated by hostility, reminding us that salvation through Jesus Christ is not limited by ethnicity, culture, geography, or social standing. But the chapter also introduces us to Simon, a man who practiced magic and wanted to obtain spiritual authority through money.Peter confronts him because Simon had misunderstood the very nature of God's power. The Holy Spirit cannot be purchased, manipulated, or used to build someone's personal reputation.Genuine Christianity is not about using God to accomplish our ambitions. It is about surrendering our lives to Jesus Christ. Then something remarkable happens.God directs Philip away from a fruitful ministry in Samaria and sends him toward a desert road. There, Philip encounters an Ethiopian official who is reading from the prophet Isaiah. The man is searching for understanding. And Philip asks him a simple question:📖 Acts 8:30"Do you understand what you are reading?"The official admits that he needs someone to guide him.And then we read one of the most beautiful statements in the chapter.📖 Acts 8:35"Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus."Philip began with the Scriptures, but he pointed the man to Jesus Christ! That's what faithful biblical teaching should always do.The Ethiopian responds to the gospel, is baptized, and continues his journey rejoicing. And here's something I don't want us to overlook. The same God who sent Philip to preach to an entire city also sent him to share the gospel with one man on a desert road. One person mattered. One conversation mattered. One opportunity to explain God's Word mattered. And the same is true today!🔥 Five powerful lessons from Acts 8:✅ 1. God can use hardship to advance His purposes.Persecution scattered the believers, but God used their movement to spread the gospel into new communities. What appeared to be a setback became an opportunity for the message of Christ to advance.✅ 2. The Great Commission belongs to every believer. The apostles remained in Jerusalem, but the scattered believers continued proclaiming God's Word. Sharing Jesus is not simply the responsibility of pastors and missionaries.✅ 3. The gospel breaks through human barriers.Philip proclaimed Christ in Samaria, demonstrating that the good news of salvation reaches beyond cultural, ethnic, and religious divisions.✅ 4. Genuine faith is about surrender, not personal gain.Simon's desire to purchase spiritual power reminds us that God's gifts cannot be bought or manipulated. Our calling is to glorify Christ, not ourselves.✅ 5. Never underestimate the eternal significance of reaching one person.Philip was willing to leave a fruitful public ministry to share the gospel with one individual. Faithfulness is not measured only by the size of the audience. And here's the challenge for us today:Are we willing to follow God when His direction interrupts our plans? Are we willing to share the gospel when circumstances are uncomfortable? Are we willing to leave what feels familiar and step into opportunities where God may use us?And perhaps most importantly, are we willing to invest in one person who needs to hear about Jesus? We often measure success by numbers, influence, and visible results. But God's Word reminds us that faithful obedience matters whether we're speaking to thousands or sitting beside one person who needs to ...
