What if the reason your leadership stalls has nothing to do with vision, gifting, or calling—but energy? In this episode of The Five Gifts Podcast, Bruce Ritter and Charles Russell slow down to reflect on one of the most important—and often overlooked—aspects of leadership: Connection requires energy. Spirit-filled leadership isn't simply about preaching, communicating, launching initiatives, or mobilizing people. Influence flows through relationship, and meaningful relationships require emotional, relational, and spiritual investment. Bruce and Charles explore six essential leadership realities: Connection is intentional, not accidental. Leaders don't simply drift into meaningful relationships. They choose to move toward people and expend the energy required to connect. Energy flows toward what we value. Where we spend our energy reveals what—or who—we truly value. Leaders must ask whether their energy has been invested primarily in people, platforms, outcomes, systems, or something else. Leaders go first in connection. Healthy leaders don't wait to be pursued. They initiate. They offer presence, empathy, interest, and invitation—even when the other person isn't particularly responsive. Connection requires emotional energy. Disappointment, criticism, grief, fatigue, and unmet expectations can drain a leader's emotional reserves. Emotional withdrawal may feel protective, but it ultimately limits influence. Connection costs more than we expect. Listening takes energy. Patience takes energy. Adjusting our pace and preferences takes energy. Comfort often resists the very connections that produce transformation. Relational energy creates influence. People don't simply follow clarity. They follow care. When leaders invest relationally, people listen more closely, trust more deeply, and follow more willingly. As Bruce and Charles close the season, they challenge leaders to enter the next year intentionally—not simply with new goals or strategies, but with a renewed posture toward people. Reflection Question Where is God inviting you to re-invest relational energy in the coming year? Not more activity. Not more noise. Deeper connection. If your leadership needs recalibration—emotionally, spiritually, or relationally—consider reaching out to Bruce or Charles about coaching. Thank you for joining us throughout this season of The Five Gifts Podcast. As you enter your next season, lead with energy, lead with presence, and lead from who God is forming you to be.
