    What if someone looked at your body and decided they knew something about you that you didn't?

    For centuries, European witch hunters and American courts searched the bodies of the accused for physical evidence: a birthmark, a mole, an insensitive patch of skin, the infamous "Devil's Mark." From Agnes Sampson in 1590 Scotland to George Jacobs in Salem, physical marks were used as evidence that a person deserved to die.

    But when the witch hunts ended, the search for meaning in our physical bodies didn't disappear. Instead, the question flipped.
