  • When Consistency Stops Serving You: How to Know When to Keep Going or Let Go
    28 Oct 2026

Consistency is usually treated like a good thing.

Keep showing up. Follow through. Don’t quit. Push through resistance.

And sometimes that is exactly what we need.

But what happens when the habit you’re maintaining, the goal you’re working toward, or the commitment you keep showing up for no longer fits the person you’re becoming?

In this episode of Clear & On Purpose, Christina explores the difference between discomfort that comes from growth and the resistance that can show up when something genuinely no longer belongs in your life.

Because capable people can get very good at pushing through.

You can keep working harder. Stay committed. Be reliable. Finish what you started.

And still be giving your energy to something that no longer serves you.

The question becomes less about whether you can keep going and more about whether the thing still deserves your consistency.

Christina shares how this showed up in her own relationship with running. For years, running supported exactly what she wanted: time outside, challenge, mental health, strength, community, and movement. As her life and priorities changed, other forms of fitness began meeting those same needs—and continuing to force running into an already full schedule stopped making sense.

    The goal and values remained.

    The activity changed.

    In this episode:

    • Why consistency isn’t automatically a virtue
    • How capable people can use discipline to avoid reevaluating what they actually want
    • The difference between resistance and genuine misalignment
    • Why pushing through can become its own form of avoidance
    • How to tell when you’re simply checking boxes instead of moving toward something meaningful
    • Why your goals, values, and definition of success should be allowed to change
    • How to compare what you say you value with where your time, energy, and money actually go
    • Why “If I weren’t already doing this, would I choose it now?” can be such a useful question
    • Christina’s experience letting running become less central without abandoning her commitment to health
    • How fear of losing what you’ve already built can keep you attached to an old version of yourself
    • Why changing the activity doesn’t necessarily mean abandoning the deeper goal
    • How intentional change can actually strengthen self-trust

    You can consistently overwork.

You can consistently say yes to things you don’t want.

You can consistently stay in a role you’ve outgrown or pursue a goal that no longer represents what you value.

Consistency isn’t valuable simply because it’s consistency.

What matters is staying connected to the life you’re actually trying to build—and being willing to keep going, adjust, recommit, or let something go when that is what the next version of your life requires.

If this episode resonated, there may be deeper hidden patterns shaping the way you operate, respond to pressure, and move through burnout, overthinking, or self-sabotage.

Your Best Days Shouldn’t Become Your Baseline

Have you ever had a highly productive stretch where everything seems to click—only to feel like you're falling behind when your energy eventually returns to normal?

For high-capacity women, productive periods can quietly distort what “normal” looks like.

You have a great week. You get ahead at work, keep up with the house, crush your workouts, create a ton of content, and finally feel like you've figured everything out.

    Then the momentum fades.

But the expectations you created while you were operating at your highest level stay exactly where they were.

In this episode of Clear & On Purpose, Christina explores how our most productive days can accidentally become the baseline we use to measure ordinary life—and how that can contribute to cycles of pushing harder, feeling behind, becoming depleted, and starting all over again.

This isn't about holding yourself back when you're motivated or deliberately doing less when you have the energy.

    Ride the wave.

    Use the momentum.

    Get ahead.

The shift is learning how to benefit from your peak-capacity periods without making your future self responsible for maintaining them forever.

    In this episode:

    • Why high capacity can distort your sense of what's “normal”
    • How a productive stretch quietly becomes a new minimum expectation
    • Why fresh starts, conferences, resets, and bursts of motivation don't always translate easily into everyday life
    • The difference between taking advantage of a productive peak and building your life around it
    • How unrealistic expectations contribute to boom-and-bust productivity cycles
    • Why the answer isn't always to push harder—or abandon your standards in favor of “slow living”
    • How to notice your own natural patterns of energy and productivity
    • Why batching and getting ahead can support your lower-capacity periods
    • How minimum, good, better, and best standards can create more sustainable consistency
    • Why consistency doesn't have to mean consistent output
    • What your slower periods can teach you about what your life can actually sustain

    Your highest-capacity days are real.

They show you what you're capable of.

But that doesn't mean they're the level you should expect yourself to operate at every day.

The life you actually want probably has range—periods of intensity, creativity, productivity, spaciousness, presence, and rest.

Your expectations need enough room to hold that range too.

Let exceptional days be exceptional. And let ordinary days be enough.

Because sustainable consistency isn't about making every day look like your best day.

It's about creating a way of showing up that still works across the full range of your actual life.

Clear & On Purpose explores burnout, overfunctioning, self-sabotage, consistency, productivity, pressure, and the hidden patterns shaping how high-capacity women work and live.

  • Am I Burnt Out—or Just Avoiding? How to Know When to Push Through
    15 Oct 2026
Send us Fan MailShould I Push Through or Take a Break? How to Know What You Actually NeedHow do you know when you genuinely need to rest—and when you're procrastinating, avoiding discomfort, or letting yourself off the hook?“Push through the resistance.”“Listen to your body.”“Stop forcing.”“Keep the promise you made to yourself.”The advice sounds contradictory because sometimes all of it is true.In this episode of Clear & On Purpose, Christina explores why avoidance and genuine depletion can feel remarkably similar in the moment—and why learning when to push yourself or pull back requires more than following someone else's rule. You might feel tired, heavy, unmotivated, or resistant whether you're genuinely depleted or simply uncomfortable with the thing in front of you. The difference often becomes clearer when you stop judging that single moment and start looking at your broader patterns. Is the resistance showing up everywhere—or only around one specific task?Have you been pushing yourself hard for weeks, or have you postponed this same thing repeatedly?Does starting create momentum, or does everything continue to feel unusually difficult? And what do you already know about the way you tend to respond when things get uncomfortable?Christina shares the questions she uses to distinguish between needing rest and needing to move through resistance, along with a simple way to treat these decisions as low-stakes experiments instead of evidence about whether you're disciplined, lazy, self-aware, or failing. In this episode:Why “push through” and “listen to your body” can both be useful adviceHow avoidance, procrastination, resistance, and genuine exhaustion can feel similarWhy looking at one moment in isolation makes it harder to understand what you actually needHow to tell whether resistance is specific to one task or showing up across your lifeWhat your recent patterns can tell you about whether to rest or keep goingWhy simply starting can give you valuable informationHow “100% of what I have today” can create healthy flexibility—or become a convenient excuseWhy outside systems, productivity advice, cycle syncing, and self-care rules should provide information rather than make your decisions for youHow overfunctioning can make pushing through feel virtuousHow “protecting your peace” can sometimes become protection from necessary discomfortQuestions to ask yourself before deciding whether to stop or continueHow small experiments can help you build self-awareness and trust your own decisionsThe outward behavior doesn't always tell you what's really happening.Someone who keeps pushing may be praised for discipline while repeatedly overriding her own limits.Someone who continually pulls back may look deeply self-aware while avoiding the discomfort required for growth. What matters is understanding your patterns, your tendencies, and the cost of the choice you're making. So the next time you think, I really don't want to do this, you don't have to immediately force yourself through it—or immediately give yourself permission to stop.Get curious first. What is actually happening here? The goal isn't perfect discipline or perfect self-attunement. It's becoming a better observer of yourself so you can make decisions with more information, more self-trust, and fewer borrowed rules.Clear & On Purpose explores the hidden patterns behind burnout, overfunctioning, pressure-driven behavior, overthinking, and self-sabotage—and how capable people can build lives and success that feel sustainable from the inside too.If this episode resonated, there may be deeper hidden patterns shaping the way you operate, respond to pressure, and move through burnout, overthinking, or self-sabotage.✨ Take the Hidden Patterns Quiz✨ Book a Reveal Session✨ Explore Coaching Through CS Coaching & ConsultingConnect with Christinawww.christinaslaback.comEmail: hello@christinaslaback.comInstagram: @christinaslabackIf you enjoyed this episode, be sure to follow, rate, and share the podcast with someone who may need it too.
