The Brave Women Talk Podcast reveals the last decade of Emmani’s mental health journey after being misdiagnosed with Bipolar Disorder I or “Bipolar Mania”. Growing up, her life was always interesting. School was challenging, making friends was extremely difficult, and sports were draining as she tried to catch up as a late bloomer. In 2016, Emmani enrolled at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina to follow her dreams of being a marine veterinarian. Her first semester was extremely difficult and exhausting while studying, trying to make friends, and being a division 1 women’s basketball manager. Even though she proudly made the Dean’s List, she was still suffering in silence. On her way back home for winter break, she shut down completely and felt out of place. She always felt misunderstood and alone. In 2017, she was hospitalized for the first time and was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, where she couldn’t believe her ears. She was told to take a leave of absence during the spring semester. In 2018, she found the place she would call home until graduation and visit Grandma on the weekends! The University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island changed her life forever. It taught Emmani how to reclaim her voice and rebuild her confidence with the help of her best friend from Kuwait, URI CELS Seeds of Success, her academic advisor, the Marine Affairs department, her mentor she calls her campus mom, staff & friends from the Williams-Mystic Maritimes Studies Program and her Disability Services advisor. She was hospitalized a total of 8 times. She made a promise to the male staff who helped her survive during her hospital stay to never look back and be a patient again, so she finally did. No more escaping, no more running, only intentional healing to be the best version of herself. During her last outpatient hospital, she was inspired to shift gears and be a special education teacher. Life was still extremely difficult with flashbacks from her past in mental health hospitals, more trouble in friendships, relationships, and more. From 2023 to 2026, so many unfortunate events happened, but so many beautiful memories did too. She chooses to remember the happy memories and be optimistic. After standing up for herself in 2024, she was diagnosed with ADHD. She still felt something wasn’t right because the medications have never worked. In 2026, she was determined to finally be heard and let go off the misdiagnosed Bipolar Disorder label that never fit. From sensory overload, burnout, masking, and so many more signs, she was diagnosed with Autism Level 1 support in April of 2026. She finally realized trusting her gut and finding a new healthcare team who believed her was the right decision after all. There are women who have similar stories of being dismissed, misunderstood, and not feeling a sense of belonging. This turned into being compliant and shrinking one’s voice. Women don’t have to suffer here alone or being dismissed. This is a safe space for like minded women to find their sense of belonging. Emmani talks about the real stuff like emotional wounds, hidden strength, spiritual growth, and the power of reclaiming one’s voice and rebuilding one’s confidence. No more masking and no more shame in being one’s true authentic self. Whether one is rebuilding from heartbreak, finding one’s true identity, or simply ready to feel like oneself again, welcome.Emmani N. West Hygiène et vie saine Psychologie Psychologie et psychiatrie
