Opening once locked doors and sharing a map to the maze.

We're Malcolm and Thomas, two engineers who got into the room at one of the biggest tech companies in the world. Pretty quickly we figured out that nobody hands you the manual once you're inside. Black Box Theory is us working it out loud.

Every week we get into what's actually going on, and we talk about it the way we would anyway: honestly, with receipts, and without pretending we have it all figured out. Some weeks that's a trillion-dollar IPO and what it really means for your money. Some weeks it's a Supreme Court ruling, a story taking over the timeline, or where the NBA is headed. Usually it's a mix of all of it, plus whatever we couldn't stop going back and forth about that week.

The point is always the same. We want to understand how this stuff really works: who's winning, who's paying for it, and what you can do with that once you can see it.

We're not financial advisors and we're not career coaches. We're two people a few years into figuring it out, sharing what we've learned and what we're still learning. If you're early in your career and tired of watching other people win without understanding why, you'll feel at home here.

New episodes every week. Come learn with us.

  • Video Games Are Telling Our Story — Badly
    23 Oct 2026

Games aren't just games anymore — they're storytellers, and millions of people absorb their version of a place and its people. In this clip we get into what happens when they get it wrong.

Malcolm and Thomas explore the power of video game narratives, especially when they take on sensitive subjects like crime and gang culture. The point they keep coming back to: accurate representation matters, because the stories games tell quietly shape how players see entire communities. When a game leans on lazy stereotypes instead of real nuance, that misrepresentation doesn't stay in the game — it follows real people around. Culture isn't set dressing, and getting it right isn't optional.

    ⏱️ Timestamps:

00:00 — The Impact of Video Game Narratives

02:39 — Cultural Misrepresentation in Gaming

📊 Key takeaways from this segment:

    • Video game narratives shape how players perceive real communities

    • Cultural accuracy is crucial — misrepresentation does real-world harm

    • Leaning on stereotypes for "story" isn't creative, it's careless

  • The Influencers Who Almost Played This Should Know Better
    22 Oct 2026

A game trivializes gang violence and flattens a whole city into a stereotype — and the first instinct for some influencers was to grab the controller. In this clip we sit with how backwards that is.

Malcolm and Thomas dig into the controversial game that turns gang violence into entertainment and reduces Chicago to a cartoon of itself, and the real disappointment underneath it: the influencers who initially lined up to play it without stopping to think about what they'd be platforming. They get into influencer responsibility — the reach these people have and what it signals when they run it for clout anyway — and the bigger issue of how little critical thinking gets applied before something offensive goes viral. Having a platform means owing your audience a second thought.

    ⏱️ Timestamps:

00:00 — The Controversy of Gang Violence in Gaming

01:12 — Influencer Responsibility and Backlash

02:38 — Cultural Sensitivity and Representation

📊 Key takeaways from this segment:

    • Media shapes perception — trivializing real violence for entertainment has a cost

    • Influencers carry responsibility for what they platform to their audiences

    • Critical engagement matters; "offensive but viral" shouldn't get a pass

  • Your Vote Matters More Than You Think — Especially in Swing States
    21 Oct 2026

"My vote doesn't matter" is the most expensive lie people keep telling themselves. In this clip we take it apart.

Malcolm and Thomas get into why voting matters — and why it matters even more if you're in a swing state, where a handful of votes genuinely tip outcomes. They push back hard on the idea that individual votes don't count, and then get into the trickier part: how political promises get used to manipulate people, and why you have to stand on your own principles instead of getting swept up in whatever's being sold to you this cycle. Show up, stay sharp, and don't let anyone talk you out of your power.

    ⏱️ Timestamps:

00:00 — The Importance of Voting

03:04 — Political Promises and Integrity

📊 Key takeaways from this segment:

    • Every vote counts — and in swing states, a small margin decides the whole thing

    • "Individual votes don't matter" is a myth that keeps people on the sidelines

    • Political promises can mislead; stand on your principles instead of the pitch
