In 1989, jazz musician Billy Tipton died from a bleeding ulcer. Examinations of his body revealed a startling reality: Billy was assigned female at birth. From 1935-1989, Billy lived as a male jazz musician, husband, and adoptive father of three boys. The revelation of Billy’s transmasculine persona in death was fodder for the tabloid media in a time of ignorance about transgender lives. Today, Billy is revered as a pioneer of the trans experience and a talented jazz icon.
