  • Chapter Six — The Motorways of Mind: Navigation, Awareness, and the Maps We Travel By
    27 Oct 2026

How can so much be happening in your head while you feel unable to decide what to do next?

In this episode of Beyond the Pages, part of Ten Minute MindVibes, author Jon Carroll explores chapter six of The Human Highway Code: A Guide to Navigating Life with Awareness and Compassion.

The Motorways of Mind: Navigation, Awareness, and the Maps We Travel By imagines our inner world as a network of thoughts, memories, plans, and feelings, all trying to join the same stretch of attention.

The chapter asks how we recognise that traffic before judging ourselves for struggling with it. Perhaps there are too many decisions at once. Perhaps a memory is shaping our understanding of the present. Perhaps we are tired, and everything has begun to sound like a personal criticism.

Jon explores the image of mental weather: how our internal state can colour what we notice. A short message asking, “Can we talk later?” might sound ordinary on one day and deeply worrying on another. The feeling deserves attention, while the story we attach to it may still need checking.

From there, the discussion turns to the maps we build through experience. A difficult conversation can leave us expecting conflict. Criticism can make us reluctant to ask questions. An approach that once helped may remain our default after the circumstances have changed.

Can we ask where a familiar belief came from, whether it remains accurate, and what another possibility might look like?

    This episode explores:
    • Recognising mental traffic without treating it as a character flaw.
    • Taking emotions seriously while checking our interpretations.
    • Experience, expectations, and beliefs that may need updating.
    • Logic, memory, emotion, and intuition as different perspectives.
    • Listening to a strong impression without assuming it is proof.
    • Advice, approval, values, and remaining involved in our choices.
    • Comparison and following someone else’s apparent pace.
    • Writing, music, conversation, and making room when attention feels crowded.
    • Flow without making effortless concentration another requirement.
    • Support, self-compassion, and the limits of road metaphors.
    • Uncertainty, perspective, and the next appropriate step.

The chapter brings together logic, memory, emotion, and intuition as familiar ways of approaching decisions. Each may contribute something useful, and each can need questioning. We can listen inwardly while also checking evidence, seeking advice, and changing our minds.

When the inner roads become congested, the episode asks whether more thinking is always the most useful response. A notebook might hold a task, a few lines might separate an event from an interpretation, or a pause in new input might help us choose what needs attention first.

The more difficult passages address becoming unwell without moral judgment. Metaphors cannot explain every cause of mental illness or promise that rest and kindness resolve it. Professional care, practical help, and companionship may all have a place.

Towards the end, quieter night roads, dreams, and a view of the stars bring a wider perspective. The question becomes how to approach an uncertain route without demanding a view of the entire future.

Jon closes with three questions for an ordinary concern: what do I actually know, what am I assuming or remembering, and what is one useful next step?

Whether reading along or discovering the book through these conversations, join us for a thoughtful discussion about understanding the directions we carry and allowing ourselves to revise them.
