What does it take to walk away from a fight? And how can one moment of courage change the course of a young person’s life?

In this episode of Be the Peace, host Josh King sits down with Byron Scott, a Peace Advocate with Alive Community Outreach at Northrop High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Byron shares how growing up without a father figure shaped his commitment to mentoring young people and giving back to his community. He reflects on the importance of building relationships with students, helping them recognize their own potential, and creating spaces where they feel heard and valued.

Drawing from his work at Northrop, Byron challenges the idea that nonviolence is a sign of weakness. He explains how he encourages students to reconsider what real courage looks like—and why walking away from a fight can require more strength than throwing a punch.

He also shares a powerful story about a student who, in a moment of intense conflict, remembered what he had learned through the Peacemaker Academy and chose to prevent violence rather than participate in it.

It’s a conversation about courage, mentorship, and the power of nonviolence to transform the choices we make in everyday life.

What does it take to break the cycles we inherit? And how can our own struggles prepare us to make a difference in someone else’s life?

In this episode of Be the Peace, host Josh King sits down with Neil Miller, a Peace Advocate with Alive Community Outreach at North Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Neil shares his journey through a difficult upbringing, his struggles with alcohol, and his determination to create a different future for his children. As he puts it, “It ran in the family until it ran into me.”
