 Barrie Craig, Confidential Investigator was a detective drama that aired on NBC Radio from October 3, 1951, to June 30, 1955, offering listeners a fresh take on the private eye genre during the waning years of the Golden Age of Radio. The show starred William Gargan as Barrie Craig, a New York-based confidential investigator who operated out of a Madison Avenue office. Unlike the hard-boiled archetypes like Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe, Craig was a laid-back, easygoing sleuth—still tough when needed, but with a lighter, more approachable demeanor that set him apart. His tagline, “Your man when you can’t go to the cops—confidentiality a specialty,” captured his role as a discreet problem-solver. The series began as Barry Crane, Confidential Investigator (with the character’s name spelled differently) and evolved into Barrie Craig over time, a rare show with distinct East and West Coast versions. Produced in New York from 1951 to 1954, it later shifted to Hollywood for its final year, 1954–1955, reflecting the industry’s gradual move westward. Gargan, who also played the better-known Martin Kane on radio and TV, brought a seasoned authenticity to the role, drawing on his real-life experience as a private detective in the 1920s. His past—working stakeouts, guarding payrolls, and even surviving a shooting while chasing a deadbeat—lent a natural grit to his performance.
