  • Why Are People So Mean? How to Protect Your Mental Health
    27 Oct 2026
CW: this episode mentions the Cornell Seven and includes a discussion of sexual abuse. Please take care while listening.“We’re going to come across mean people. It’s part of life. But you have the power to decide how that’s going to impact you, and you don’t have to carry that with you.” - MichelleMean people are draining your mental health, and on Life Happens with Barb and Michelle, the mother-daughter duo are revisiting this popular topic. This week, they get into why people lash out and how to stop internalizing it.Michelle opens with the everyday stuff: a honk the second the traffic light turns green, the nasty comment from a stranger, the dig at the holiday dinner table, and why we carry it around all day like it belongs to us. Barb adds a new layer this time around: a lot of today’s meanness comes down to control and power, and she wonders what living with it is doing to our mental health.Barb shares how she pictures a shield in front of her, blocking the nasty comments that come in, and what she saw at an airport after a three-hour delay. Michelle explains why imagining the honking driver’s whole day helps her take it less personally.Barb and Michelle also discuss:Why meanness is rarely about you: control, insecurity, impatience, and people who are simply at the end of their ropeProtecting your energy and your mental health when you can’t control what other people say or doHow to check in with yourself in the moment, from HALT (hungry, angry, lonely, or tired) to remembering that feelings aren’t factsWhat to do when you’re the mean oneAs Barb said, “we are worth having our own energy back.”Want more help putting this into practice? • Q&A with Barb and Michelle: Toxic Family, Self-Love, and Overwhelm
    20 Oct 2026

“It’s not about you needing to be fixed. It’s about you needing to understand that you already are worthy.” - Barb

Self-love, toxic relationships, and feeling overwhelmed: these are just a few of the topics in this week’s episode of Life Happens with Barb and Michelle, where the mother-daughter duo are back with one of their favorite formats, a Q&A from their community.

Barb shares how she gets through difficult family gatherings, from volunteering for the grocery run to taking the grandkids out for ice cream. Michelle reflects on Scott Peck’s line that life is difficult, and how once you accept that, it can take the edge off when someone rubs you the wrong way.

They then get into how to build self-love and how to keep it even when it feels like life is knocking you down.

    Barb and Michelle also discuss:

    • Handling toxic family and workplace dynamics, loving people from afar, and building emotional resilience
    • Why self-love and confidence take daily practice: from talking back to untrue thoughts to morning affirmations
    • How to build a mother-daughter bond, and why no relationship is perfect
    • Coping with overwhelm: three questions to ask yourself and “be where your feet are”

If you’re struggling with your relationships, your workplace, or the relationship you have with yourself, you’re not alone in figuring out life’s challenges.

  • Make Your Mental Health Practice Your Own, Not Someone Else's
    13 Oct 2026

"I'm okay with people having their opinions … but I'm not okay with them saying it's the only way." – Barb

In this week's episode of Life Happens with Barb and Michelle, the mother-daughter duo get personal about mental health, asking for help, and how to make practices feel like your own.

Michelle gets vulnerable, sharing her experience with the loudest voices in the self-help world. They once convinced her she could meditate, journal, or affirm her way out of depression, and she opens up about how long she suffered before she let herself ask for support. Barb reflects on what 42 years in recovery have taught her, and why no teacher, treatment, or trend is ever the final answer.

Together, Barb and Michelle push back on the stigma around mental health medication and the pressure to follow one person's set of rules, word for word. Their advice? "Be the scientist in the laboratory of your own life." Try things on for size, and listen to and trust what your body and intuition are telling you.

    Barb and Michelle also discuss:

    • How to spot someone selling you “the one way” in a self-help journey
    • Finding your practice, your teachers, and your community, and building an emotional well-being toolkit that works for you
    • Ways to use social media for mental health education while still seeing a licensed professional for a real diagnosis
    • Practicing self-compassion: forgiving yourself for what you didn't know before you learned it

Whether you're new to personal growth or decades into your practice, this episode is a reminder that there’s never any shame in needing support.
