"Avalon Time" was an American old-time radio comedy/variety program that aired on NBC's Red Network from 1938 to 1940. It was primarily known as the show that gave comedian Red Skelton his first big break in show business and on radio. Here are some key details about "Avalon Time":
  • Sponsorship: The program was named after its initial sponsor, Avalon cigarettes. Over its run, it was also sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh Pipe Tobacco and the Bulova Watch Company.
  • Format: It was a variety show featuring a mix of comedy, music, and sketches.
  • Hosts and Stars: While Red Skelton became the most prominent star, the show had several hosts:
    • Red Foley (1938-1939): The show premiered with country artist Red Foley as host.
    • Red Skelton (1939): Skelton took over as host in early 1939 and was instrumental in shaping the show's comedic direction. He introduced many of his famous characters, including "Clem Kadiddlehopper" and "Junior, the Mean Widdle Kid" (whose catchphrase was "I dood it!"). His wife, Edna Stillwell, also joined the cast.
    • Cliff Arquette (1940): Replaced Skelton as host.
    • Dick Todd (1940): Took over for a brief period before the show ended.
  • Music: The show featured musical interludes by guest singers and the Avalon Orchestra.
